How to Save Money at Strathmore Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Currah helped myself and my family through one of the worst days of our lives. It was time to say goodbye to our 15 year old canine family member. Her bedside manner was amazing and we all felt very reassured that we were doing the right thing in helping him cross the rainbow bridge. I am also thankful for Leanne at the front desk - she is so kind and helpful. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name of the extremely kind woman who made us a special gift we received in the mail soon after. I appreciate you all! 🐾❤️

We couldn't be more appreciative of the outstanding care our pets receive at the Strathmore Veterinary Clinic. The entire team is incredibly attentive, patient, and gentle with our furry family members, ensuring each visit is as stress-free as possible. Their accommodating nature is truly commendable—they allow relatives and close friends to pick up our requested prescriptions and even facilitate payment over the phone, making our lives so much easier. Orders are always fulfilled quickly, reflecting their dedication and efficiency. Above all, the care they provide is both affordable and of the highest quality. We're grateful to have found such a compassionate and reasonable veterinary practice. Thank you for the immense love and care you show our pets!

Was a wonderful experience with my Axel White Head all his up to date needles. Could have offered the nail clipping...but it's OK.

Besides that the floor seems dirty in the room, this is probably a good place for regular yearly check-up. However I can’t say the same for serious illness or rare condition. I brought my cat in last Thursday for treatment, she was put down yesterday at another clinic. She developed sepsis from mastitis. The vet and staff at this Strathmore clinic were friendly and patient, squeezed me in for an appointment on the day I called, and even called me to follow-up which I appreciated. But I think the follow-up did not serve its purpose. I wish they have rejected me and I could have gone to a different clinic and my cat may still be alive. I’m sharing my experience today hoping it could gain readers precious treatment times and save your furry friends’ lives. After the initial treatment at this clinic, my cat’s energy indeed was recovering. On Friday she developed a couple more blisters. A couple of her breasts got hard patches and one breast started to swollen and large area around it showed different colours than the rest. I informed the staff, sent pictures. I was told this is a natural healing process call “firbin” during the call-back. With this assurance, I was relieved. Although her skin condition worsen, her energy level was recovering back to normalI and started to purr again when I pet her. Sunday night, we found lots of discharge stains from her skin on her bed. And wounds showed dark red colour. I informed the staff on Monday and sent pictures/videos. No concern about all these symptoms from them, no advice about bringing her in for another check-up; but instead, the vet suggested me to buy 5 dose of Mirtazapine (I googled, it’s an anti depression drug that can increase appetite) and 10 cans of RC Feline GI Cans. She was aware that we have wet can food and creamy snack pouch at home. She suggested to try something different. I asked if I can get smaller doses to try coz I’m not sure if this solves the problem. Then they “disappeared”…. I tried to feed her more food, and she puked. I told the clinic she puked, her skin colour is purple black and more dots of discolouration appeared, but I don’t hear back from them anymore. I thought it’s the side effect of the Metacam upsetting her so she puked. I thought if the professionals were not concerned then she’s probably ok. But on Tuesday night, she walked with difficulty. On Wednesday morning, she doesn’t drink water anymore. After carefully reading every google review for many different clinic, I called this clinic which is 90km away from me and took her in! I was told she was shutting down and we need to let her go to sleep. I look back, if I was alerted by the 1st clinic during follow-up, to bring her in again on the 2nd day when her skin continued to worsen, or on the day she developed discharge, or on the day she started to show purple/black discolouration, or on the day she puked, she might have been saved.

A big thank you very much to Dr David Walker for the job he did on our dachshund cross, Coco. He had such a painful back we had to carefully carry him around. After following Dr David prescription as prescribed, Coco is totally back to himself again. Full of life and a very happy little guy. Thanks again Dr David Walker
