How to Save Money at Stone Willow Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am so happy I found Stone Willow! I have a 14 yr old cat with kidney failure and mega colon so really appreciate the supportive more integrated type of veterinary support. Ken is very knowledgeable and it's very affordable. It's been 7 months since we thought we would have to say goodbye to our sweetheart, but although it's not a curable, accupuncture and laser is helping along with other simple meds. I can afford the visits on my pension. I really recommend Ken at Stone Willow and his admin team is awesome!

I brought my Italian Greyhound, Mavis, to visit Dr. Ken and our experience was wonderful. Despite my dog being a difficult dog with anxiety. For more context: Mavis was born with a birth defect and her patellas/kneecaps are not where they should be and her back legs are fused, keeping her in a hunched position at all times. For most of her life this didn't cause issues beyond the fact that she couldn't jump, but she still was very mobile. Now that she is a senior, some arthritis has set in and she has been getting quite sore. A few months ago, Mavis got attacked by another dog and ever since she has not been right, screaming dramatically over the strangest things. Now when Mavis wails it is with the full capacity of her little lungs in a way that is not unsimilar to a banshee with it's tail slammed in a door. If she is nervous or uncomfortable she just lets loose, because why not? Why not shatter the eardrums of everyone in a 10 mile radius? So naturally I warned Dr. Ken about my stupid little baby girl and apologized in advance, the only assurance I could offer was that Mavis has all of two teeth left in her head and can't possible bite, even if she does scream like some kind of cat from hell. Much to my surprise, Dr. Ken was able to do Mavis' treatment with not even a peep out of her and very low stress! I cannot be more grateful for that! Mavis has had multiple accupuncture exams in the past, but always has been very dramatic for every visit. We have never been able to do an appointment without Gaba+Traz on board for the week prior to her appointment. Then we take extra care to keep her head covered so she can't actually see the vet or she flinches and screams. Mavis managed this appointment with no meds on board! I have her booked in for a second visit and hope to see some changes in her very soon.

Dr. Ken was a life saver for my dog! When I brought Mea to see him, she was so sick from an unknown source, that another vet told me she wouldn't survive to her 10th birthday (she was only 9 yrs old). Dr. Ken's holistic approach and treatments kept her with me until she passed at 11 yrs + 3 months and I am SO grateful for Dr. Ken with all of his compassion and understanding, when he helped her over the rainbow bridge. If I ever have another dog, Dr. Ken will be my first vet!

Ive been taking my pets to Ken for 12 years. He is by far the best and most caring vet in central Alberta. Thank you Ken, Marlene and Heather for all you have done.
