How to Save Money at High River Veterinary Clinic
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot recommend this place enough! The staff are so kind and welcoming and really help you to feel at ease when leaving your pet....I live in Calgary but drive to them for that very reason and the care they provide is exceptional 💕. Thank you!

I am so grateful to Dr. Miles and the support staff at High River Veterinary Clinic. I have brought in some very challenging cats over the years. Dr. Miles has been amazing in her kind and compassionate handling of cats that do not want to be handled. She has worked miracles on cats with chronic health issues, providing them with an ongoing enjoyable quality of life. Knowledge and experience makes High River Veterinary Clinic my go to clinic for difficult to diagnose health issues.

Utterly disappointed with our recent experience at this clinic. We brought in our family puppy for a routine teeth cleaning and were informed that, if necessary, teeth extractions would be performed. Given our diligent care of her dental health through daily brushing and dental sticks, we did not anticipate any major issues. However, upon picking her up, we were shocked to learn that six teeth had been extracted without any prior notification. This lack of communication is, in our view, highly unprofessional. Our puppy is a cherished member of our family, and a courtesy call to inform us of the situation and prepare us for such a significant procedure would have been greatly appreciated. We hope that in the future, the clinic will implement better communication protocols to ensure that pet owners are fully informed and involved in decisions regarding their pets' health. Additionally, in today’s economy, a significant increase in the bill can be a considerable burden for many families.

In July 2025, we will mark 20 years of High River Vet Clinic taking care of our fur babies. Over that time, we have been extremely fortunate to have had THE. BEST. EVER. vets in Dr Broadfoot, Dr Macleod, Dr Hughton, and most recently Dr Cox and Dr Miles. (There are only two other vets I would add to that list.) My friends can confirm how much I brag on "my vet". High River is known for it's enduring "small town feel" and HRVC very much contributes to that feeling. Even on the busiest of days, we are greeted warmly by those at the front desk, get asked about how our pets are doing, and never feel rushed through our appointments. Our fur babies well-being has always been their top priority. And I say that having had several furries over the years with unusual, perplexing, and/or chronic medical issues that sometimes have taken time and a process of elimination through tests to find the correct course of treatment for the individual furry. The cost of care has always been reasonable and fair. I hope I have adequately expressed often enough my gratitude and trust in their years of experience, critical thinking skills, and ability to have the tough conversations with compassion. The entire HRVC team has and remains top notch. If it wasn't, I would have gone somewhere else. I look forward to the next 20 years of Dr Miles and the team taking care of my fur family.
