How to Save Money at Veterans Memorial Drive Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought in a stray i picked up and her 5 kittens. The Good: The cost. They were very fair. All cats got checked and they got dewormer and probiotics. Fecal exams were performed. The cost was around 120 and it included the meds. Instructions were very clear and first batch of meds weere handled by the vet staff. The Bad: The wait was kinda long but this wasnt a huge deal for me. The walls are very thin so you can hear almost every word of what every vet staff person says. They seem to have a very positive work environment and seem to get along well, so it wasn't a bad thing- it was kinda nice. All in all, I really liked this place and thought they deserved a good review.

I was having a great experience here until my follow-up appointment, which completely changed my opinion. I brought Chief in because his face suddenly started swelling. The vet said it was likely a bug bite and told me to bring him back in two days for a recheck. What is extremely frustrating is that nobody informed me the “follow-up” appointment would cost an additional $65. Had I been told upfront, I would have had the opportunity to decide whether I wanted to come back for a quick recheck or simply continue monitoring him at home unless his condition worsened. Instead, I came back for an appointment that lasted only a few minutes, where I was basically told he looked better and to continue giving Benadryl. That is information that honestly could have been communicated over the phone, especially considering the vet already believed it was a minor bug bite reaction. It was honestly shocking to be ready to leave and then suddenly get hit with another hefty charge on top of the $121 I had already paid just days before. The biggest issue here is the lack of transparency. Clients deserve to know costs before being told to return for additional visits. It feels very misleading to call something a “follow-up” without making it clear there will be another exam fee attached. Better communication and honesty about pricing would make a huge difference and help clients make informed decisions about their pet’s care.

We absolutely adore Courtney & Dr. Green!!! Micah has been thriving with water therapy & laser treatment (he is a 9yr old giant breed!). This helicopter mama is so thankful for their support and love. Micah was a VERY nervous boy and everyone took the time to make sure he felt comfortable. He now races into the room, walks around like he owns it, and walks into the treadmill without any issues. We have been to several therapy clinics and I promise if you meet Courtney & Dr. Green you will become loyal clients.

They were so great with my dog! Everyone was friendly. We got in and out in a timely manner and I felt like the price was appropriate. When I declined certain services, there was no pressure and they were really upfront about which vaccines/treatments are a priority in this area and which are not as important for my circumstances.

Dr Knapp and staff are incredible! I was hoping to find an expert vet with holistic knowledge and that’s exactly what I found! I went home with a bundle of ‘meds’ to supplement into my dog’s food regimen & my old girl got her first acupuncture treatment! Everyone made us feel at ease throughout the appointment and we never felt rushed! Dr Knapp had a full hour set aside for our visit and I left there feeling very confident and assured! Thank you for a great first visit!
