How to Save Money at Pet Check-Up

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My whole family have used Dr Hudson since 1994. We moved over an hour away but continue to use Pet Check Up. It’s worth the drive. Dr Hudson is a wonderful friend of ours and wouldn’t trade her for anything. We have had to put several pets down over the years but she’s always been there for us. Recently, we had to put our German shepherd down because of a neurological disease and Dr Hudson sat in the floor with us while she administered the injection. She’s very caring but she is a no nonsense, tell it like it is person. So just know that up front. We LOVE her.

Dr. Hudson is the best. The staff know my pups by name and treat them with incredible love. So responsive, well priced, and knowledgeable. This is the only veterinary clinic I will take my dogs too.

I have been using pet check up for over 10 years and they have helped us through two pets crossing the rainbow bridge ❤️‍🩹💔. They are honest and do not try to charge you for unnecessary services for your pet. The staff has always been helpful, although I no longer live in the neighborhood I still drive 45 minutes to bring my pets here.

I’m confident that my pets receive the attention and medical care they need. The staff is knowledgeable and caring. The fact that I’ve been going here for almost 15 years with my beloved furry children speaks volumes, even the ones that are no longer with me.

I am not sure how this clinic got a high review on Google, must be from her employees, but, she has a 3.6 on other sites. I would have given her 0 stars if I could. So I used to use Dr Hudson years back and refered a few of my friends to her. Sunday we had a serious situation with one of our dogs and she needed to have an operation. Since I had many good experiences with Dr Hudson in the past, I called her to see if she could do the procedure. I told them we had carecredit for our dogs but they said on the phone that they could try prepay with it when we got there today. When we got there Dr Hudson attempted to pick up my dog by her neck, even After she was made aware that my dog had been in the hospital on Sunday. My dog had a lot medication given to her the other day not mention she has a massive infection in her body. When I told her no and I held her myself, she walked out of the room. She then came back in and began basically reading me the riot act about me telling her no and why my dog was not fixed. She said "I irritated her when I told her no". She said she did not remember me so I told her about my past dogs that she had treated and she then remembered. She was rude, abrasive and attempting to be controlling. she didn't even physically look like the lady who treated my other dogs. Not to mention the clinic appeared dirty and unkept. Nothing like I remember before. Then I told the assistant that I needed to make sure that my credit care would work before we had anything done. They ran it and it declined. So I told my husband to go call credit care to find out what the problem was and he stepped outside to do that. . while we were trying to get it resolved the entire staff left the building and left us sitting in the parking lot. So after finding out it didn't work was because she was not in the network. We had to decide whether to pay out of pocket or not. But after the way she treated us, hell was going to freeze over before I paid out of pocket to her. This woman didn't even seem like the same woman who treated our dogs years back. That woman was kind, knowledgeable, caring to my animals and to myself and my family members. This woman was rude, thoughtless and obviously did not care what happened to my dog. Truly unprofessional to say the least. I guess the universe let me know not to trust my fur baby to her care. I will never take another one to her nor refer her to anyone I know. Luckily we found a wonderful clinic within the credit care network that is high highly reviewed with very professional people and very sanitary place to take our fur baby to get her surgery. Do your homework when dealing with some of these low cost clinics. . Buyer beware!
