How to Save Money at Gulf Coast Animal Eye Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

These are the exactly the kind of people you want to be taking care of your baby. We took our dachshund mix, Spud, to see them after an extremely sudden change in vision and behavior. Everyone here was so kind and welcoming. You can tell that they are all passionate about what they do and it feels like they have a true team atmosphere there. We absolutely loved our experience there. Spud even did so well and we give credit to Dr. Swanson and Ms. Sheila at Gulf Coast Animal Eye Clinic for making him feel so comfortable and safe. Thank you ❤️

Dr. Villar was such a gift to us! I had taken my cat, Sasha, to 2 vets & called numerous veterinary ophthalmologists regarding my cat’s cherry eye and everyone said she would need surgery. Dr. Villar said that first she would try to put it back in place manually. She numbed the eye and was able to push the gland back into place in seconds. Highly recommend Dr. Villar and this eye clinic!

I was referred here by my dogs vet. My 13 year old dog was suffering from corneal ulcers which he saw his vet for twice in the span of 2-3 months and no improvement at all after all sorts of medications. We saw Dr. Glaze here at this eye clinic. She has a ton of experience. She was super kind and gentle with my dog who was extremely nervous. They did extensive eye tests to confirm the corneal ulcers and went on to treat it with a quick in office procedure called Keratotomy. It was a little expensive ($600) but definitely worth it. By week 3 my pup was all better. So thankful for Dr. Glaze. I definitely recommend this clinic if your animal is suffering from any eye issues. I attached before and after pics to this review.

Dr. James Herrmann and staff are super helpful and have, by far, the best bedside manner of any place I've been. In doing his diagnostics, my cat barely complained. He is thorough in determining what interventions we can employ and the contingencies that may arise. So grateful for them.

I had a wonderful experience at Gulf Coast Veterinary Ophthalmology for my dog, Beau Duke 💙 Buckalew. We were referred by our veterinarian due to some cloudiness in his eyes, which turned out to be edema, and I’m so grateful we were sent here. From the moment we walked in, the staff was incredibly kind, welcoming, and professional. You can tell they genuinely care not just about the animals, but about the people who love them. Dr. James Hermann truly went above and beyond. He took his time explaining everything in a way that felt clear and reassuring, even showing me photos so I could fully understand what was going on. That level of care and communication made such a difference. You never feel rushed, and you leave feeling informed and supported. I also brought my other dog, Baby Bee 🐝 Buckalew, with me since they’re always together. I rarely leave them apart unless absolutely necessary, and the team didn’t miss a beat. They welcomed her, included her, and made her feel just as comfortable even though she wasn’t the patient. That meant a lot to me. There’s also something really special about the legacy here knowing Dr.James Hermann comes from a family of animal ophthalmologists adds an extra layer of trust and respect for the work they do. They even sent us home with a sweet little bag of treats for Beau Duke, which was such a thoughtful touch. I left feeling confident that my dog is in the best hands, and that peace of mind is everything. We already have a follow-up scheduled, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Dr. Hermann and his team to anyone needing specialized eye care for their pet.
