How to Save Money at Clay Road Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I really love brining my dog to this clinic! Ollito is well taken care of and the doctor is so kind, patient and knowledgeable. I like that the clinic is privately owned because the doctor shows so much empathy and he’s not constantly trying to up-charge to meet quotas. I also come to this clinic to buy my pet safe candles which smell so good and my paw spray. I never let my dog walk in my house after being outside without using this spray. It’s an antimicrobial spray and I feel better about letting my dog on my furniture because I know his paws are cleaned.

We love our new vet. It's a great and easy location to get to. It's not an overwhelming waiting room like many vet clinics, appointments are made and kept and seen to with ease. Pricing is very fair! The techs and ladies there are friendly and do their jobs well. Dr. Smith is a very caring, practical and understanding vet who puts the patient before the profit and is a great person.

I have been coming here for 10 years. This place has gone downhill so bad. I have had experiences where i’ve had an appointment at 1 and the vet comes in at 4 and rushes the appointment. I came today at 12 while my appointment was at 12:30, and left at 1:40 without seeing the doctor because they’re just playing in peoples time. If it is an appointment only based system then stick to the appointment times. Another thing is the room was dirty. The floor, the examination table, I can’t even express how disappointed I am that I won’t be coming back even though Dr. Smith helped my cats in the past. They never answer the phones anyway, always straight to voicemail regardless of how many times you call. and they’re always booked for weeks in advance and say they’re always busy, and yet the clinic is so quiet and so empty that i can hear staff talking or whispering. I’ve also seen many other reviews stating the same thing and yet no changes. Do yourself a favor, look for another vet.

I brought my dog in for some surgery to remove a tumor and dropped her off on I believe a Tuesday and paid for the surgery. No problem. I was told to come back in 2 weeks on a Wednesday for the stitches to be removed. My appointment was at 12:00. I arrived at 12 and was put into a room. I waited and waited then Dr. Smith and his assistant finally came in. My room was facing the parking lot. While I was waiting, one vehicle left with their dog and 3 more pulled in, brought their dogs in and left. I asked why I was waiting an hour to see him. His response was to hold his hands out to the side and say jokingly, you haven't been here an hour. I said, you're right, I've only been here 55 minutes. He threw his hands up in the air and said, "Well I guess it's time for you to find another vet" and walked out of the room. I was left there with my mouth open with the assistant. To this day I don't know what happened in the surgery, what was removed, where there any problems, what to do for after care, did I need another appointment, nothing. Thankfully the assistant removed the stitches. I told the assistant that I wanted to see him and sat in that room for another hour and he never came back. I even asked 2 other girls working there to see him. We have been going here since he first bought the clinic from the previous vet. So, probably more than 20 years. We used to think super highly about Dr. Smith. But, after that adolescent outburst and the way we were treated, we will never step foot in there again. I value my best friends health way to much to take a chance over there again. The pricing was starting to go all over the place too. One visit we were charged $45 and the next $85 for the same thing. One time $55 and the next time $165 for the same thing. If you bring your fur babies in and are left sitting forever, don't say anything or you might get the same outburst. I was left sitting for 1 1/2 hours on another visit and 1 hour on another visit prior to this. I just didn't say anything. And, if you ever need to call, the ringer is off because they never answer the phone. 3 dog trainers that I know said they will never refer anyone there again and that I should report this to the vet board of Texas. I did not do that out of respect for the many years of good service from prior visits.

The staff was friendly and the Veterinarian took good care of my cat by removing a tumor on my kitties stomach. His price was very affordable considering the surgery needed. I was only charged $350. As to another vet clinic I took her before wanted THREE THOUSAND! There prices were ridiculous. Thank you Clay Animal Clinic for your kindness and care for my cat.
