How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Brought my pup Dakota in due to ingestion of medication, the staff were fast acting, he hadn't had symptoms so he wasn't top of the list for treatment but they still made sure to be monitoring him. Dr. Valentine and the main tech i spoke with Quin were both amazing and provided information with efficiency, longest part was dealing with ASPCA and their poor customer service but that's not on VEG, Dakota tends to be shy with new people but he loved the people here. I'd say the cost is comparable to most ERs, which is expensive but they give a high end quote so you know what to expect and refund what ended up not being needed. I absolutely recommend this place if it's an emergency!

Wonderful treatment and care for my little Lollie. From the moment I called asking for advice to stepping into the clinic, everyone was helpful and showed they cared for her. The open area is nice, you never feel alone and you can be with your baby all the time. Thank you! 🙏

I was a veterinary assistant for 6 years and have worked with a lot of emergency vets. I left the field shortly after VEG opened so this was my first experience with them. Recently, my 4 year old cat went into respiratory distress suddenly and EVCOT said they were too busy to see him and referred me to VEG. I’m very grateful for them. They triaged my boy immediately with urgency but also while staying calm as I bawled my eyes out. They were communicative, kind, and willing to work with my tight budget. I didn’t feel judged for not being able to afford a huge bill which I was so grateful for. They also offered several options to help with costs like care credit, scratch pay, and affirm. The best part was that I could be with my boy through the whole thing which makes the cost worth it. They are more expensive than some places but the care is very good. The doctor I saw and all the techs that helped my cat were wonderful. It was a busy night for them too. They never seemed annoyed if I asked a question and were always ready to help. Sadly, I had to say goodbye, but they had a very nice, quiet, cozy room for that and let me spend as much or as little time as I needed. I cannot express how grateful I am for them. I will try to go to them for my urgent needs in the future. Thank you for taking care of Peter.

On the Fourth of July this year we had to make a visit to VEG. It was our first time ever coming. The facility was extremely clean. They had an open area where you could watch your pets and make sure they are safe. Not to mention snacks and a wonderful bathroom. (Bathroom had tampons, dry shampoo, tooth brushes and tooth paste plus more.) Here is my experience. Our Shepard Kirby got very sick the day of the fourth. He was pooping blood so we rushed to the emergency vet. We got there in good time and they were waiting for us patiently as we had called ahead! We were guided to a room where the doctor would meet us there. We had blood draws and x rays (both of which I got to be in the room and assist with. X-rays we’re done with me out of the room but I got to help my dog go in and be there when they knocked him out) to determine if he would need surgery as there was a high possibility his lower intestines could be damaged due to some pork bones he had gotten into a few days prior. The staff were and are absolutely amazing. We had Caitlin and Teri, two fantastic ladies who helped guide me and my boyfriend through the entire way. Caitlin was very sweet and very attentive while Teri was chatting it up making it very easy to distract myself from what was happening. Both girls treated my boy very loving and affectionately while doing an amazing job. Our doctor, Dr. Welling Was also amazing. He was upfront and honest about all cost while making sure my Kirby got the best care possible. In total with pain medication and x rays, not to mention meds sent home I spent about $2000. Personally it was well worth the price especially late on a holiday.

Angel had constipation issues. Never been to pet urgent care. Would give more than 5 stars if I could 🌸🐈Loved the tech that checked us in. Very warm and caring. 🌸🐱🐱Two veterinarians checked on Angel. She gave the last vet a nose kiss. The last vet shared he is a street ragdoll cat dad. 🌸🐱🦄The level of care and compassion Angel and I both received, exceeded our expectations. I was a hot mess crying over Angels constipation issues. I love the fact parking is in front of the business. I felt safe. I was not pressured to make a big commitment on her care. I felt listened to. And the tech checking Angel and I in was perfect. She was very grounding. I can’t thank her enough. 🌸🌸🌸 I did follow up Angels care at another pet hospital they suggested. Still trying to figure out her constipation issue. 🐈🐈🐈🐈 Update. After following up with Angel’s regular veterinarian, Angel had tape worms and fleas. She is back to her happy self less than a week after being here. I am so happy I found this emergency vet clinic. Cats especially can get sick fast. It’s comforting to know they are open 24 hours.
