How to Save Money at Burloak Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot express my gratitude enough to the staff at Burloak Animal Hospital for supporting us through the loss of our beloved pet bunny. We found ourselves in a more emergent situation seeking vet care from this hospital for the first time (we were referred by our usual vet) and even on the phone the receptionist was warm and understanding. They were all wonderfully kind, empathetic and patient despite that we were their last clients of the day on a Saturday; they were exactly what we needed while we said goodbye to our best friend.

I’m not sure there are enough kind words to say about the staff at Burloak Animal Clinic. We have a frenchie who has Addison’s, allergies and now a broken toe. I have complete faith in the vet techs, office staff and various vets on staff. It is such a great environment filled with professionals who love their pet patients.

I'm surprised I haven't wrote a review here sooner. Burloak Animal Hospital has some of the most compassionate and knowledgeable staff I have encountered in my 28 years of being a pet owner. Dr. Hale, Sabina, and the rest of the RVT's have provided us with overwhelming support during times when my loved ones desperately needed care. Back in 2021, my bunny had been neutered at another clinic, and the incision had repeatedly kept opening up - I suspect an error had been made in the initial surgery. The initial clinic had tried several times to seal the area properly, but ultimately kept opening up leaving him bleeding with an open wound. Burloak Animal Hospital had taken us in last minute, responding to my emails of distress even past clinic hours. They were able to successfully do laser surgery on him, and were thorough with follow ups and additional appointments and after care. We do not live in the area, but now go here annually for his regular checkups as I would not ever go anywhere else for him. In recent times, our pup had suddenly fallen ill and his health continued to decline - his usual clinic was closed for the day. Again, Burloak Animal Hospital had taken us in last minute on a weekend to do a thorough assessment and tests, and called around and referred us to another emergency clinic locally to look after him overnight. Thank you to everyone on staff for continuously taking care of our little family.

The only place I’ve ever trusted with my rabbits! The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. I’ve had rabbits now for over 15 years, I have always had the best experiences here. They truly understand rabbits and make sure to get a detailed history, and the team is so gentle (even when my rabbits are not, sorry about that!). I recommend to everyone regardless of pet type to come here!

Dr. Sarah is such a compassionate and kind vet. We have a 14 year-old rabbit with many medical issues. He is blind, deaf, and today was diagnosed with arthritis. Dr. Sarah has helped us immensely with improving our rabbit’s quality of life. Thank you for treating our rabbit with love and knowledge! The perfect combination. This morning I called because our rabbit was favoring one leg. Not only did they squeeze us in, but they did so on a Friday, just a few days away from major holidays. Also, we’d like to express our gratitude to the rest of the exceptional staff!! From the staff at the front counter, to the vet techs, they ALL are loving, kind and professional. Just the type of people you’d want to look after your fur-baby. Our bunny is old, but you’ve given us the gift of more time while making sure that our rabbit is comfortable and pain-free. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
