How to Save Money at Union Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff here is PHENOMENAL! They're extremely accommodating and the Dr. was very helpful and gave many options to help us with the situation we were in for our dog. Where most would only want to take money, Union was open to differ us to specialists and gave us several routes to take. The facility is super clean! The staff is so comforting and nice. It was a fantastic experience. It's local and so very convenient! A++++ to Union Animal Hospital!!!

If your pet (loved one) is in dire need of care, dont bring them here unless you dont want them to live. Our pet was having consistent harsh coughing for the past week and now stopped wanting to eat within the last 24hrs, so my mom brought him into this facility to get him checked out. Upon retrieving xrays to see if he was having lung issues, he collapsed and gums completely went blue. They administered O2 and stated based off his xrays he wasnt going to live much longer and we should probably start thinking of putting him down…this was from a mere image without complete inquiry of medical history, nor did they show interest in taking any medical history since his symptoms at the time showed as if “he wasnt going to make it much longer.” I fought and advocated for our pet as I then explained he does have a history of epilepsy and wanting more information at whats causing his symptoms prior to just deciding to “put him to sleep”. They said our only options were to put him down or get him transferred to a specialist in an ER Vet Hospital which they dont think he is going to make the transfer because it was about 30+minutes away. Upon asking if there were some sort of O2 portable device he can have in order to make the transport since it was really all that was keeping him stable at the time, I was told “theres no such thing…” After a quick research and few phone calls, i find out there are transports that exist just for pet emergencies and they do supply O2 as well as a vet tech to ensure your pet makes it through transport as comfortable as possible. After transferring him to the ER successfully, the doctors there kept him on O2, did a full assessment and bloodwork, and said that he would have to see a cardiologist which they didn’t have on sight till the next following week. Irregardless, the hospital did whatever it took to stabilize our dog, and since being at this new hospital he has not coughed or fainted once. His stats were improving, and by day 2 after an overnight stay of heart meds, O2 therapy, and hydration, (which by the way Union Hospital refused to explain to me why they couldn’t keep him hydrated even though he was passing out everytime he urinated) he recovered back to his normal self. Does he have to remain on heart meds for the remainder of his life, yes. But did he need to die for it?? NO! The fact that this was the first answer and only solution we were convinced and pushed on, shows this place only cares about taking your money and/or doesn’t have the time to really help your pet in dire need (whether due to staffing issues or not), their first course of action would be “put it out of its misery.” Doctor Markowitz even complained I was giving him a “hard time about it”. Im sorry if advocating and trying to do whatever it takes to save our pet’s life that we’ve had for over 14yrs is giving this place a “hard time”, i suggest everyone searches elsewhere for help, especially God forbid if your pet’s life is on the line.

The best !! I have 2 dogs and have taken them here and they always feel better after the right medication is given to them. I am so happy with the service. They work with your budget and answer all your questions. Highly highly recommend!! Dr.King is the best !! Took my dog to the hospital and spent so much money for the wrong medication and diagnosis. Dr.King was able to tell what exactly was wrong and it’s been 2 days with the proper medication and my dog is feeling and looking so much better. Thank you so much !!

Worst experience ever I brought my overly sick puppy here for two days in a row & they sent me back home with just vitamins & antibiotic; after i expressed my puppy’s breathing is very abnormal & she hasn’t ate in two days they told me her lungs are congested; but didn’t take seriousness into me saying my puppy spit up blood; just for my puppy to pass away 4 hrs later
