How to Save Money at Hume Park Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My usual vet is North Road Animal Clinic, but when my 16 year old cat was suddenly very lethargic and unable to use her hind legs, they weren't able to see us quickly and they directed me to Hume Park Animal Hospital. I called them, explained what was going on and I was able to get an appointment within an hour. The registration and check in process was really easy, and very thorough. The staff are all animal lovers and compassionate people and it shows. The vet explained exactly what was going on with my cat as best he could based on his examination. He recommended a course of action, as all vets do. When I asked about her quality of life after all the tests and possible long term medical treatment, he was completely honest. There was a 50/50 chance that her quality of life would improve. He also told me that my cat was in very bad shape. They gave me as much time as I needed to talk to my spouse and make decisions. We realized that putting our 16 year old cat through a battery of tests was going to be too much for her, and we decided to end her life. They offered to schedule another appointment later that day so that my spouse could be there too, but I didn't want my cat to suffer any longer. They gave me all the time in the world to say goodbye to my cat and at the same time, the staff were there for me through the whole process. I was even allowed to hold her while they gave her the injections. I highly recommend Hume Park Animal Hospital.

I discovered Hume Park Animal Hospital earlier this year when I moved to New West. With a senior dog and 4 year old cat, finding a good vet was important to me. The very first visit, Dr. Kahlon diagnosed my dog with a chronic condition based on all the symptoms my previous vet ignored. We got him on the right medicine and my dog’s personality came back! The clinic gave the same quality care to my cat, taking the time to test my cat’s allergies rather than just guessing. (My previous vet’s guess was totally wrong.) When my dog became ill, they gave him the best care and fully supported my decision to say goodbye. The entire staff was generous and gracious through the entire process, giving me all the time I needed to say goodbye to my sweet pup. Simply put, this is the best vet clinic I’ve ever been to, whether in Canada or the U.S.

My best friends and I have been taking our cats to Hume park for a few years now. The staff here is absolutely incredible and they genuinely care about the well being of your animals. I could write a gigantic letter about how truly incredible, sincere, and knowledgeable the team here is, but I could not possibly put my gratitude into words. A HUGE thank you to the amazing staff here for always being there for us when we needed them most. You have always been honest, empathetic, and go above and beyond. My cats love the staff here, so much so that I would gladly bring my cats to visit just for fun. Hume Park - never change! Keep up the amazing work that you do. We love you people, thank you!!!! 100000/10 would recommend.

I recently switched and have made Hume Park Animal Hospital my primary vet after many years of being a patient at another popular local vet in New Westminster. I am glad we made the switch and am so grateful to have my dog get the care he needs at this vet. In our experiences every time we visit, the front desk staff, vet techs and Dr. Kahlon have been very informative, transparent and have given great service making me feel comfortable that my dog is in good care. My dog Max had major dental surgery, having to get all his teeth removed in June 2024 and I’m glad I chose this hospital to have the procedure done. From the start of the process all the way to end of the recovery stages, we were sent home with proper instructions and aftercare and follow up was great, which made the recovery process so much easier. If you are searching for a new vet in the area, I would definitely put Hume Park Animal Hospital at the top of the list and recommend their services for your pet.

We have 12 years old male cat Leo (short from Napoleon), who is a trouble maker and always creates drama when it comes to visit the vet. Does it it sounds familiar? :) We were so relieved that Hume Park Animal Hospital accepted us as a new patients under this circumstance. No, this is not a typo. When saying "patients", I meant our cat and all his "staff". :) Our first visit was stress free. Dr. Kahlon and his team are professionals, very patient and did a thorough examination. The clinic also have a proper electronical follow up and notification system, so you can't miss any vaccine or treatment. Thank you Hume Park Animal Hospital TEAM for your kindness and patience!
