How to Save Money at Hastings Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have been bringing my cat Milo to Hastings Vet for years now and I have had nothing short of good experiences. The team genuinely cares for my cat's wellbeing and it's clear in the way they provide follow-up calls and emails to check up on Milo. My vet tech, Anna, is amazing and I would recommend her to anyone with no reservations. She even takes the liberty to send me photo updates when Milo was caged up for a procedure! Photo attached. He looks grumpy but I am sure he would have been worse without Anna. Keep up the amazing work and thank you for serving our community 💜

I have been taking my dogs to Hastings Vet for 15 years. The staff is amazing, we drive over from North Van and the slight inconvenience is worth it. They cared for my two previous dogs, and both were put down there when they were seniors, and they now care for my current dog who is three years old. Have never felt ripped off or pressured, and the vets take their time to listen to our concerns and explain everything they need to do. They are even gentle when telling me my current dog is fat, ha ha. Everyone from front staff to vets are compassionate, lovely people, I highly recommend this practice.

Best veterinary clinic ever. We bring our cat Dinah and our dog George to this clinic. George had cancer treatment through the clinic and is recently 1 year cancer free. The staff are so friendly, we really feel that our pets are in the best care!

BLINDED MY DOGS EYE!!! If you love your pet do not bring them here! I brought my dog here because of all the good reviews they had. I brought my dog for blood work/ teeth cleaning and extracting his tooth’s and they ended up giving him a cataract in one eye! I have emailed them back and forth which they believe they did not cause like are you kidding me his eye was not like that before! you do not get cataract OVER night it happens over time as they grow older!!!! I have sent them PROOF of his eye before the surgery and after + even they examined him before doing the blood work or any tooth extraction and they never told me he had cataract which he didn’t before the dental procedure after the surgery procedure his eye was red and foggy (he couldn’t even open that one eye at one point after the surgery so I emailed them right away with pictures of how his eye looked telling them my concerns and they told me to bring him in to just made me buy a stupid eye drop which didn’t do anything! Now he can’t even barely open that one eye they are money hungry thieves paid over $3000 for them to damage his eye!!! even wanted me to pay another 700 for X-rays! I have to take him to another vet now and spend MORE money because of their stupid selfish doctors that do not care! I have to now get a second opinion because they do not believe me! And they ignore my email now pathetic vet !! IN RESPONSE TO their reply : I never once swore AT you guys or any of your staff 2, I would never trust your referral to any vet guys recommend 3 looking at your other reviews you guys have killed a cat at your vet during a spaying surgery! Disgusting and careless vet & unskilled doctors! I Feel like it’s all my fault for putting my trust into this vet! All their reviews are FAKE, after I left this review they got everyone giving them 5 stars! Please DO not trust them with surgery or any serious issues. Now my poor dog that I’ve had since he was 8 months old blinded in one eye!! I cry looking at him from what they have caused to him.

When we had to have our 12 year old cat, Lilli, put down recently everyone at the clinic was so kind, caring and understanding yet professional it made things much easier to bear. After discussions and deciding this was the right course of action to take, the euthanasia procedure was fully explained to us, we were then taken into a separate quiet room where we were allowed to spend as much time as we needed, at each step of the procedure, to stay with our little lady and say goodbye to her properly. She went very peacefully and it was definitely as good an experience as having to have your cat put to sleep could have been. Thank you specifically to Dr. Alex, as well the others who helped us, everyone was very considerate and caring.
