Is Pet Insurance Worth It?

I signed up for Trupanion when I purchased my Cavalier at 3 mos. I did my research and Trupanion seemed like you got the best coverage for the best rate. Woops! Fortunately, I had no claims during the first year. Trupanion states in all their literature that their rates only go up based on Vet care in your area and breed. Nothing about increases approved by the state insurance commissioner or their profit and loss. After one year my rate went from $34 a month to $66. You can read all the reviews with their spokesperson's responses and it's the same mantra. It appears that they have now changed their policy and increases will be a regular occurrence based on additional criteria they are now implementing. I then began my search for a new company. VPI had a list of exclusions pages and pages long. Forget them. Others have increases as your pet ages, and some were even more than my newly adjusted premium. Reviews of various companies address claims concerns. Some claim denials seemed reasonable, but a good portion seemed unreasonable, i.e. your vet didn't provide as detailed documentation and now the insured is out of luck. Bottom line, unless you're the unlucky pet owner that spends a great deal of time at the vet, put your high monthly premium in the bank. For me over the course of 14 years, barring any further outrageous increases from Trupanion, I will have banked $11,088, not including that tiny bit of interest you earn at the bank today. INITAL iNSURANCE COVERAGE

I RESPECT THIS COMPANY!I PURCHASED A PUPPY (MORKIE) THAT DIED WITHIN 10 DAYS. I SUBMITTED MY CLAIM DURING THE FREE TRIAL PERIOD AND THE COMPANY HONORED THE POLICY, EVEN THOUGH I HAD NOT PAID FOR COVERAGE. THIS WAS DURING THE TRIAL PERIOD.THANK YOU TRUPANION. YOU ARE AN HONORABLE COMPANY THAT PROVIDES EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE. THIS WAS A VERY SAD TIME FOR ME AND MY FAMILY. YOU LESSENED THE FINANCIAL BURDEN THAT CAME WITH OUR PUPPIES DEATH. MY NEW PET WILL BE COVERED BY TRUPANION INSURANCE.

Great company to have insurance with

I have a 1 1/2 hear old yellow labe named Hailey,who jumped in a snow bank to chase a squirrel, and when she jumped she tore her cruciate and had to have a TPLO to fix the leg. My claim was pretty high and Trupanion paid the claim much to my satisfaction.

ACL repair (X2)

I highly recommend this company. My dog is 2 years old and just had his second ACL repair. The insurance company is very fast to reimburse. I am so happy we had the insurance as these procedures are very costly. They even rushed a pre-approval since we were getting married in 2 days.

Speedy Claim process

I just had a great experience with Trupanion. My puppy Coco got really sick and as it happened on a Sunday I had to rush her to the emergency room where they held her for few hours, I was really worried about the cost for this service, well the bill was huge and when I pick her up they suggested she should be seen by her vet the following morning. I took her there where they x ray her, run some blood work, and give her fluids. When I pick her up after medicines, and all the tests she had gone through I paid again a huge bill. Well I faxed my claims a couple of days later, immediately after that I received an email with the confirmation of my claim and few days later another one with the approval of my claim and few more days later I received 2 checks for most of the expenses of my Coco. I am so glad of not having this fear that if Coco gets sick she will not get the appropriate care because of the cost of it. Thank you Trupanion!

Payout Limits

Unlimited lifetime payouts on eligible conditions with no payout limits-ever.

Deductible

You can choose your deductible from $0 – $1000, in $5 increments, to fit your budget. Trupanion offers a lifetime, per condition deductible meaning that once the deductible is met for an eligible condition, you never have to meet it again. That condition is covered for life. This is great for chronic conditions that can span the entirety of a pet’s life such as allergies or cancer.

Age Limits

All pets under 14 years old can enroll. Once enrolled, pets stay insured regardless of age.

Waiting Period

Accidents: 5 days Illnesses: 30 days Other providers may have additional waiting periods for congenital conditions like hip dysplasia, Trupanion does not.

Exclusions

Trupanion was developed to protect you and your pet from unexpected illnesses and injuries.
