Long time VPI Pet Insurance customer (15+ years) comments on the Nationwide takeover of VPI
Well since you asked. We have had numerous pets covered by VPI over the years. We have also, unfortunately, submitted many claims over the years with VPI. VPI staff was always available and helpful when we had issues or questions regarding a claim, and claims were paid promptly. We recently moved to Reno, Nevada, where we adopted 2 young cats from the Reno Humane Society, to “warm” our new house. Fonzie (aka Dragos) was one of those kittens. Fonzie was a year old when we got him in May of this year. Unfortunately shelter animals do not come with a “medical history” printout. So when Fonzie got sick in June and had to stay with the vet for a few days we had no idea what it could be. His diagnosis was a fever of unknown origin and he would have died without treatment.
Having had numerous dealings with the old VIP staff we confidently submitted our claim. You can imagine our shock when his claim was denied. What the heck? We called and were told that his medical history was required plus copies of his treatment records. We explained he was a shelter kitty and we had no records. This went on for a few months back and forth, call VPI, send records, call VPI send records. I think we sent his records via all available methods, email, fax and UPSP. The months slipped by, I called or emailed every couple of weeks to try and resolve the issue. Finally we got a letter in November (I think) letting us know our case was under review. Finally almost 6 months to the day we received our payment for his claim, Merry Christmas to us.
In general the staff we encountered were very pleasant and I sincerely believe they wanted to help. Unfortunately I felt that they were working from a script and could not think outside the box to negotiate the claim. Shelter kitty=no medical records or history? Shelter kitty Dragos=Fonzie as named by his new family.
However, I do remain a loyal customer and I will recommend your services and I thank everyone we have worked with on Fonzie’s claim.
I don’t know what the problem was with Nationwide VPI and I hope you have gotten all the bugs out. We have 6 pets and remain loyal customers even though we had a rough patch with Fonzie and his claim. I continue to recommend to all my friends and acquaintances that they insure their pets, its just the smart thing to do.
