Unfair policy regarding pre-existing conditions
I adopted my dog, Kimba, on September 1, 2018 and his policy began October 1, 2018. On September 17 I noticed a swelling in his paw, so I brought him to the vet on an emergency basis to make sure it was not infected or painful. I completely understood that this visit would not be covered by insurance, but I did not want to make him suffer for two weeks until his policy began. At this visit, in addition to examining his swollen paw, the doctor made a two word note saying, "severe perio." Because of that two word note, when his policy became active and I later submitted a claim for my dog's dental cleaning it was not approved because Nationwide determined his poor dental hygiene was a pre-existing condition. Had I waited two more weeks to bring him to the vet, I would not have this issue, but I wanted to have his paw examined immediately. I am concerned that your policy incentivizes unsafe behavior. My pets are elderly, and when I someday adopt new pets I will be reluctant to bring them to the vet for emergencies prior to their policies beginning in case the doctors make any notes such as what happened here.
My claims for my dog were under review from October 2018 through the end of January 2019, which I found to be a completely unacceptable timeframe. I was asked several times to provide records going back to 2017, and I had to explain several times that I do not have those because I adopted him in September 2018. I paid his premium every month while his claims sat on hold for what felt like endless reviews.
I feel like Nationwide is using that two word note from September 17, 2018 as an excuse to not cover his dental cleaning, which is completely unfair. Had the doctor not made that note when I brought the dog in for a separate issue, or had I waited two more weeks until his policy began, his dental cleaning would have been covered under my policy.
For this matter, I am completely upset as your customer. I have 5 animals total insured through Nationwide, and have been otherwise happy with your services.
