They insist diarrhea is a “pre-existing condition” and refuse to pay

My dog had some blood in his diarrhea before we registered for his insurance plan with Fetch. Since this is a common symptom among dogs like vomiting, he had another bloody diarrhea after he had a plan with Fetch. They refused to pay us because according to the agent I spoke to on the phone, bloody diarrhea is a “pre-existing condition” for my dog, although it was clear that last time and this time were two separate cases, not related. It’s ridiculous.

My experience so far…

What I liked about Fetch so far is anytime I've phoned I was always able to talk to someone knowledgeable to help me understand my policy which I find very convoluted and confusing about what is covered and what isn't. They have also been very kind and courteous Understanding your policy is important so you know what you're actually responsible to pay for. The first 6 years I didn't use it much as our cat has been pretty healthy but lately she has had some issues that required some medical attention. Having said that there is some procedures that she needs done so it was nice to have a policy in place to help share the costs. Pet insurance can be quite expensive but so can an emergency trip to the vet. Pets are just like people and can have unexpected health issues at any time without warning. Sometimes you don't think about that when you first bring your new pet home. Fetch has been pretty good. Submit the claim form which goes in for a review and once it's completed and accepted you can have the money directly deposited into your account. The review time process is reasonable and you get constant updates as to the status of your claim. So far I'm pleased with the customer care and service they provide.

Raise Prices Every Year

I was happy with Fetch when I first got it. It was affordable and I felt good knowing my dogs were covered. My dogs are (just turned) 4 and (almost) 3. Their premiums have doubled since I got them insured. They were insured since almost day 1 and prices have only gone up and up and up. They don't give any discount for adding a second pet and they are not simple to deal with when submitting a claim. They will try to relate ANYTHING to a pre-existing condition. My dog had a cough as a puppy and they tried to tell me her pink eye was pre-existing from the cough over a year prior. I had to fight to get $30 eye drops covered. The app glitches often and reimbursement is slow. I have contacted them already about all of these things and their response took weeks and was basically just excuses why. Including the area I live in, just like car insurance. So no matter how well I take care of my pet, if I live somewhere they deem more hazardous, they will charge me more. Like they assume if I live in a city I'm going to let my dogs play in traffic. When I first signed up they said the premium increased in accordance with yearly vet increases. This is so NOT the case. My insurance is so much now, that it would be cheaper to just pay their bills outright at the vet. Fetch does not provide more or better service for the price increases either. I would definitely do things differently next time. If my insurance continues on this trajectory I would have been WAY better off setting monthly money aside for any illness or emergencies they may have. Insurance is not affordable for the average person. It would be nice if a company that actually cared about pets' being well being existed in Canada. Right now it's just as cash grab tugging at our love for our pets.

Monthly Cost

Plans average $35/month for dogs and $25 /month for cats

Coverage

You choose a reimbursement level of 70%, 80% or 90% after your deductible.

Payout Limits

Annual limit of $5,000, $10,000 or unlimited depending on your chosen plan.

Deductible

$250, $300 and $500

Age Limits

Fetch doesn’t enforce upper age limits, so you can enroll your pet any time after it turns six weeks old. Some providers limit coverage for older pets to accident-only. Fetch doesn’t limit coverage by age so that you can get the right care for your buddy, no matter what.

Waiting Period

Fetch’s waiting periods are up to 15 days for accidents and illnesses and six months for orthopedic events.

Exclusions

Fetch won’t cover pre-existing conditions, cosmetic procedures, boarding costs, breeding costs, wellness care items, or accidents and illnesses that occur during waiting periods.
