My Cat Schreiver had Gingivitis and two extractions were recommended because the teeth are resorbing, which is a secondary illness. I did not want Schreiver to have dental surgery because another vet had recommended that I take Schreiver to a cardiologist. Because I did not have my cat’s two upper molars extracted, the claims adjuster, is dissecting my cat’s procedure and saying that dental cleaning is one procedure and removing gingivitis is another different procedure
I verified what Prophylaxis is with AI and the claims adjuster stated that She cannot accept AI’s explanation.
Yes — scaling and polishing are core parts of the standard veterinary procedure used to treat gingivitis, according to the AAHA Dental Care Guidelines and veterinary dentistry sources.
Here’s the clean breakdown grounded in the search results:
✔️ Scaling is part of gingivitis treatment
AAHA’s dental guidelines list supra‑ and subgingival scaling as essential steps in a professional dental cleaning and periodontal therapy. Scaling removes plaque and calculus above and below the gumline, which are the irritants that cause gingivitis A.
• AAHA: “Scale the teeth supra‑ and subgingivally… removal of plaque and calculus” A
• This includes ultrasonic scaling and curettage of debris in gingival pockets.
Because gingivitis is inflammation caused by plaque/tartar, scaling is the therapeutic step that actually treats it.
✔️ Polishing is also part of the gingivitis procedure
✔️ Why both are included
Gingivitis is reversible because the supporting structures are not yet destroyed. The treatment goal is to remove irritants and restore gum health.
Scaling removes the cause; polishing prevents rapid recurrence.
Key components of a true dental prophylaxis
AAHA defines it as a procedure “performed on a healthy mouth… to prevent disease and remove plaque and calculus above and beneath the gum line under anesthesia” A.
Perhaps pet owners should read Embrace Pet Insurance reviews, especially with the Better Business Bureau to see if this pet insurance is a good fit for you. I had to escalate my case to the Better Business Bureau over a measly $66.85. This is a pet insurance that will argue, argue and argue. They feel that $66.85 is worth more than a negative review.
Then there was the time that my cat Allie was diagnosed with oral cancer. Embrace Pet insurance did not want to pay my claim, so they said that it was FRAUD! When Embrace Pet insurance collects premiums without having to pay out, that’s kosher. But the minute they had to pay my claim for an illness, it’s FRAUD. Did Embrace Pet Insurance pay my claim for my cat’s illness for Oral Cancer? Yes. However, it took me going to the better business bureau to get the issue resolved. Embrace Pet insurance told me that they were going to conduct a thorough investigation, And they still came up empty handed !
Allow me to recommend a pet insurance company. Prudent pet insurance. They’re more expensive, but they do pay out on claims. How much more expensive? I insured 9 or 10 cats with illness and accident coverage with Embrace Pet insurance $126.00 in 2019 or 2020. Embrace pet insurance is $453.00 a month in 2026. My cat Rico’s policy was $60.00 in 2025 and was increased to $161.00 in 2026 and Rico’s policy is going to increase in 2027. This is for a $5000 policy, $200 deductible and 70/30 coverage. You do the math.
I insured One senior cat with Prudent Pet insurance for a little over $100.00 - 80/20 coverage, $10,000 limit. When Mitzi was diagnosed with an illness, Prudent Pet insurance paid my claim, no questions asked.
I guess with pet insurance, you get what you pay for.
