Compare insurance companies
I would recommend checking several other companies before going with AKC insurance. I used AKC for about a year before ending my contract. They covered absolutely nothing. Any labs that were done, AKC said it was a pre-existing condition and wouldn't cover costs. It would be cheaper to save a little every month on your own to cover unexpected costs that way. Our labrador was having some hair thinning on his flanks and the vet recommended a thyroid test. AKC wouldn't cover any of the visit or laboratory costs because they said he has a pre-existing condition (overweight). However, we drew the labs due to symptoms: weight gain, thinning of fur. I would check with other companies on how they handle labs and what they consider "pre-existing."
