How to Save Money at MedVet Northern Virginia

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This review is long overdo, because I knew I would struggle to put into words just how truly incredible Dr. Boostrom really is. First and foremost, I would like to start off by saying that my family is beyond blessed to have found a doctor so genuine, kindhearted, intelligent, and passionate as Dr. Boostrom. My sweet Delilah (a 13 yr. old pit bull mastiff mix) was diagnosed with her second bout of cancer, this time, an inoperable tumor on her bladder. We had been traveling over an hour to another facility in Springfield, VA for Delilah to receive intravenous chemotherapy, which caused her white blood cell count to drop so low that one night, she ended up being admitted to the MedVet ER. Everything happens for a reason, and while Delilah was being kept overnight at their emergency department, we were told of a new oncologist coming on board, Dr. Brendan Boostrom. Being a much closer drive to our home than our drive to Springfield, we decided to set up a consultation. Within the first 5 seconds of Dr. Boostrom entering the room, we were captivated with his presence. He had the most calming demeanor, genuine look of love for our dog, and made us feel as if we were his only patients that existed. While at the appointment, Dr. Boostrom took the time to get to know Delilah as a patient (she typically is terrified of the vet, but she loves visiting Dr. Boo), and took the time to get to know us as her parents. He went over Delilah’s entire health history, her previous cancer removal, the intravenous chemotherapy she previously received, and her recent stay at the ER. He answered our many, many questions, never once rushing us or making us feel as though our thoughts and concerns were an inconvenience. Dr. Boostrom laid out all of our options, the different treatment plans available, and what our future would look like if we decided not to treat at all. We truly felt as though we were a team, and even Dr. Boostrom began signing off his emails as “Team Delilah.” During our appointments, there have been moments of sadness, moments of laughter, and most importantly, moments of hope. We leave each appointment with nothing but hope. I still find it difficult for me to put into words how truly incredible of a doctor Dr. Boostrom really is, and after each appointment, I still find myself in awe that doctors like this even exist, and that he is ours. In such a heartbreaking situation, having Dr. Boostrom is the best thing that could have happened to us.

Everyone was so kind and friendly and welcoming. It is so calming and reassuring to walk into the office and really feel like the doctors and staff care for us, especially when we're feeling anxious and worried sick about our dog, our family member. I live 3 hours away from this office, and I would drive back in a heartbeat because I truly feel like we were cared for.

Watch out for those high prices and low customer service. We had our pet examined for possible cysts and instead, was x-rayed with a potential cancer diagnosis. Instructed to leave pet overnight for $3000. Instead we brought pet back for scan in following morning (saving us the invoice) and was told we had to wait behind 8 other customers. We were under impression we could drop our pet off and return after the $800 scan was completed. We were treated in a dismissive manner and did not feel comfortable remaining or ever returning, especially when they max out your credit cards.

I had to go there several times for my two guys as they got older and had illnesses pop up. Everyone there seems great and they take their job to heart. I had both my guys cremated through med vet and as sad as it was to do I felt the genuine care from the staff there. Like most emergency vets it’s a little pricey. RIP Rocky and Gizmo

Our pomsky, Kristoff, was attacked by a coyote. We rushed him to MedVet where they met us at the door. They not only saved his life, they kept us up to date the entire time and treated him like he was their own, including playing music for him to calm his nerves. Words cannot express how thankful we are to the MedVet team. Other than losing his tail, you wouldn’t know that Kristoff had anything happen to him. We are forever grateful to them for caring for Kristoff and never giving up.
