How to Save Money at Independent Hill Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My 18 year old poodle recently had 2 significant events that indicated he was suffering and at the end of his time with me. I always intended to honor his long life, limit any suffering and give him a peaceful passing. I intended to see Dr. McFadden, who was unavailable so I made an appointment with Dr. Cheng. Huge mistake. He told me that I needed to put him on more drugs, and wait and see how many seizures he would have to see if it was an acceptable amount of suffering. When I stated I didn’t want him to suffer anymore at all and that I couldn’t imagine coming home to have found him having died alone, he said to me “sometimes these ancient dogs just drop dead.” I am the one who held him when he had seizures and helped him stand to eat when he was too weak. I changed his diapers, put gates up when he went blind so he didn’t get hurt and carried him in a shoulder wrap when he couldn’t walk. My mom was with me and said that he didn’t know who we were anymore and was coughing so much he wasn’t able to easily get comfortable. Dr. Cheng told me there was nothing physically wrong with him. The complete lack of compassion was appalling. And the attempt to manipulate me into thinking that I hadn’t cared well enough for him was simply abusive. I cannot say enough that if you care for your fur babies, do not let this unkind, uncaring man anywhere near them (or you). The absolute worst vet experience of my life. **This review has no impact on my opinion of Dr. McFadden, she was always exceptional treating both my baby and I with dignity and compassion.

I loved my previous vet at this location but they are gone. I too won't be returning after my last visit. Dr Chang was rude and I believe he was careless with the treatment of my pet. As of this writing, most bad reviews that mention a name are about him specifically, and they vaguely mirror my experience (ie: rude, careless).

The service is good, especially from the vet tech. She explained everything to me in terms I could understand and she demonstrated how to give a cat a pill and cut her nails. The veterinarian was good too and he gave me several options for helping my cat feel her best. This visit cost about what I expected but previous visits seemed to be more expensive than expected. The other customer in the waiting room was very surprised by her bill, as I had been in the past. We all want the best for our pets but I wish there were more options for retirees and others with fixed and lower incomes.

I Love this veterinary clinic! The people here make you feel like you are the most important person in the world. My male lab Mr. Jake is as calm as I have ever seen him at a vet clinic. Lisa McFaddin is so personable and good with my dog. Lisa is so smart and knows allot about animals. You can see she truly loves what she is doing. They understand what you are going through and share your feelings. They know our animals are family to us. I feel that my dog will get the best available care here. On top of that this place runs like a well-oiled machine thanks to Jessica Haydon the Practice Manager. I never hear anyone say sorry we are out of that and can you please come back. The location is very convenient. This is the only veterinary clinic I will ever use. I tell everybody about how great this place is!

I'm glad I found this place. I have been bringing my cats to Independent Hill for holistic care. Dr. MacFaddin has provided chiropractic adjustment, acupuncture, and cold laser therapy to alleviate my cats' arthritis. It may not seem like it and my cats may never admit to it, but I believe they enjoy going to the vet for treatment too! They are now able to enjoy a better quality of life.
