How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am so happy that VEG moved in so close to me. We came here after an unfortunate dog bite incident. We immediately talked to a vet tech (Sam) who took our pup’s vitals and assured us that she would be OK. Dr. Wong then took a look at her and wrote up a proposal which she discussed with us. Our care team worked to make sure our pup was comfortable, even doing some of the care in the lobby where our pup felt most relaxed. We felt involved throughout the whole process and were so happy to be with our pup the entire time. I was glad that she knew we were there with her. All of the staff was so kind and I’ll come here every single time I have an emergency, though I hope I won’t have to again!!

This is my first encounter with VEG. I didn't know anything about them before arriving other then that they were an hour away and my vet recommended them as everything was closed due to the holiday. From my own encounter and my observations of other patients visiting at the same time as me, the staff are polite and friendly, trying to gently go at a pace the owners and pets are comfortable with while still doing what they need for the animals. They let Hobbes (my cat) stay in his backpack as much as possible for the treatment. I had Dr. Stephanie, who was a patient an attentive listener while I explained and she communicated clearly enough for my sleep deprived self to understand her findings. Edward was the main technician working with us, he was respectful and gentle. There was another lady who helped as well, but I didn't catch her name. She was bright and cheerful interacting with Hobbes and warned us when an "aggressive" dog was arriving. Edward did end up moving us to a quiet room when Hobbes seemed stressed by the loud dog. Things were explained clearly, including what we were doing and what to expect. Dr. Stephanie did a follow up with us at the end and answered all my questions and Edward saw us off afterwards. I hope I don't have to return, however, if I have another pet emergency 10/10 will return.

Really nice facility. They answered the phone right away and let me explain what was going on with our dog. We both agreed it would be best for her to go in and be seen. We were greeted right away and taken back; they triaged and did everything they needed to. They were transparent and provided an estimate with the breakdown. I love that everything was sent straight to my phone via text and my husband and I could easily see the costs. Bonus—they do offer a first responder discount which is awesome. We feel that our dog was cared for very well and treated properly. Customer service is also fantastic. We highly recommend VEG! So much better than other emergency vet practices in the area.

If I could give 10/5 stars I would. VEG was absolutely phenomenal during our visit where I had to bring my cat Luna in. As soon as I walked in the door I was treated with compassion and urgency. Every single staff member was so kind, attentive and knowledgeable. I can’t say enough about how great Dr. White was with Luna, he has the calmest demeanor and fixed her right up. I wish they could be her normal veterinarian office because I love them that much! Can’t recommend enough ! 🤍

If I could, I would give them a million stars. We had an emergency with our Bunny on Memorial Day and after calling 4 other hospitals we finally found this group. When I called I had a wonderful and kind woman answer my questions and tell me to come on in- we live about an hour away so we hoped in the car and got there as soon as we could. We were greeted with a warmth and concern for our beloved bunny and immediately they started treatment. The facility was so nice and the staff were so kind and understanding. The Vet was amazing and explained everything - they were all so understanding and delicate while talking to us, as we were both visibly upset .. but they did so while swiftly taking care of our bun. Unfortunately, we lost her. It was gut wrenching. But I’m so thankful that we had these lovely humans taking care of her in her last moments. I know they tried their best to save her and when she passed they moved us into a private room to allow us time to grieve. It truly was awful to have be there and to have our bunny pass away, but we are BEYOND thankful that on Holiday, we not only found a place to take her, but a place with an amazing team. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.
