How to Save Money at Value Vet- By Appointment

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I was so pleased with Value Vet’s service, facility and over all customer experience. I used them for the first time this summer for my dog’s annual check up. There was no pressure or upsell, they let me choose the vaccines I wanted for my dog, and suggested we start with the lower cost treatment for a recurring ear infection. We will be back next year! It still smells like a vet. I took this picture at the beginning of our first appointment. My dog was dreading it. But by the end, after having his ears cleaned and getting treats and love from the staff, he was happy. When we went back a month later, he was much more relaxed and happy to be there.

I wish I could give no stars. If you don’t love your pet this is the place to bring them. I liked Dr Cook but I can no longer bring my poor Stitch in here. I originally came in because my cat had a weird mass on his hind thigh/leg. Dr cook said he would take samples to see what it was. He prescribed us three single doses of pain medication and sent us off home. Almost a week passes and I don’t receive any type of communication about Stitch’s panel that was taken on his mass. I tried calling the falls church location and no one would answer. This was at 10am. I get a hold of someone at the McLean location and they kindly patch me over to the falls church location. They originally told me Dr Cook was available and that he would look over the results and call me back. No one called me back. I called back once again around 2pm and was told that DR Cook was actually not in today and that another dr will give me a call. I finally get a call from a doctor I’ve never heard of and he told me I shouldn’t be worried and that the mass wasn’t cancerous and it was probably either an insect bite or some type of internal bleeding from some type of trauma. Here we are about a week and a half later and I am in the Emergency room because poor stitch has an infection and also a fever of 103.9 I guess you get what you pay for and nothing about this vet has value. My question is. Why wouldn’t any of the doctors I spoke to assign Stitch some type of antibiotics? I also should add that the mass ended up oozing out puss out of it so it was infected. ANTIBIOTICS should have been administered to Stitch when Dr cook first saw Stitch and even poked his mass with a sharp needle to get sample material to be sent off. Disgusted with this practice. I love Stitch. I’d rather spend more money than put his health in the hands of “value vet” if you are reading this please be careful with this practice. Do not put your loved ones solely in value vet’s hands.

I brought my dog here for her shots a couple of weeks ago. Two days after she was sick. I called this morning to get an appointment with this location. There is a call center that takes their calls I let them know which location I took her to and that I want to go back to that one. I called to confirm address and what time I’d be there. I arrive to this location and they’re not able to see her because she was booked at the other location in McClean. I asked if there’s anything they could do to accommodate the fact that I had to drive here in the first place as she got sick from this place and I’d have to be inconvenienced to come back another day and they said no. They told me they would pass the message to the manager which just means no and my manager will also tell you no. I live over an hour away with traffic. I will not be back and I suggest you bring Lysol if you’re going to bring your pets here.

I took my dog in for a lump on his back. While I was there I asked for a worm prevention prescription. I misplaced it and called to get them to send me another one. They refused. Not only that, but they won't allow the pharmacy to call them to verify the prescription THEY wrote. Absurd. They tried to talk me in to coming by and buying THEIR version of the medicine and said they didn't allow third party pharmacies to verify the prescriptions with them because they can't verify the purity of the medication. Of course, this is just a way to sell a more expensive version of the medication that they can make a bigger profit off of. There is literally no reason they can't verify the prescription. I work during their business hours and cannot come by. They just care more about their profit than my dog, which isn't cool.

If you're looking for a place to get vaccinations, and routine healthcare for your pet, this place is perfect. The staff and vets are friendly and kind, and are always willing to take their time to explain things to you. Unlike the big box vets, they don't spend half the appointment trying to sell you "packages" you don't need, nor do they try to upsell you on products and extra lab work or radiography like other practices do. Appointments are almost always available within a day, at either this location or the other The only downsides are if your pet has a serious health issue, you will have to go to another practice, and the number you call for appointments is not directly to the office, but the conveniences and pricing is well worth any minor inconveniences.
