How to Save Money at Mountain Vale Clinic/Salt Lake Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have been seeing Dr Whitty since 2006. He has been an excellent vet as far as taking care of my dogs and I have been pleased with the service. I give him 5 stars for his care of my animals over the years. Unfortunately, I have noticed that rates have sky rocketed. One area that I have been able to save money on was using chewy and smiths for prescriptions. I was just told this week when I needed a prescription that I needed to use their in-house pharmacy now, no exceptions. One of my dogs has been on a daily dose of fluoxetine and trazodone for a couple years. Through Chewy I was paying approximately $10 for a 30 day supply of both. Now with going through their pharmacy that they have contracted out to the costs will be approximately $120-130 every month. When I asked the reasoning behind not allowing to use other pharmacy's, the lady at the front desk confirmed that one of the reasons was to make more money off their customers. I was completely shocked and disappointed. I can't in good conscious return to SLC Vet Services.

They take awesome care of my dog and cat. When I had to 'let go' of my 15 year old dog a few years ago, they did it with dignity and great care. I just love them.

I am a very anxious Frenchie owner, dr whitty helped me figure out my pets heart arrhythmia and pointed me to a great cardiologist clinic. He also spayed and performed a stenotic Nare surgery to help my sweet girl breathe better . They are very attentive and always squeeze me in for emergency visits.

Dr Whittey and his staff are just excellent. They care about the animals and owners and really pay attention to detail regarding medical care. I have taken my pets to Salt Lake Veterinary Services and Dr. Whittey since 2007, and I've never had a bad experience. Dr. Whittey has very high integrity and knows what he's doing. A few times over the years if I took a pet to another veterinarian for quick care because Dr Whittey was booked out a bit, I just wasn't as impressed with the detail and medical knowledge compared to what Dr. Whittey has For example, Dr. Whittey noticed that my cat had a heart murmur a couple years, but it wasn't serious yet. Last year in the meantime, I took my cat to another clinic when I needed emergency services. They said my cat did NOT have a heart murmur. Recently I took my cat for a regular checkup with Salt Lake Veterinary Services and Dr. Whittey again detected a heart problem. This time Dr Whittey was even more concerned and had an EKG and some lab testing. From there my cat had to get an echocardiogram, and the heart specialist reported that my cat’s upper left atrium was highly enlarged. He’s had to go on heart medication which has really helped. If Dr. Whittey had not caught this, it was serious enough that my cat could have died of heart failure any moment. My cat had been on heart medication, and now he is back to having energy and being ornery. Dr. Whittey has put together a really good plan, and I'm grateful for every day I have with my little guy now. .

We had to put our dog of 16-1/2 years down and we were all so very heartbroken. We can not say enough good about how they handled us and our sweet pup. Thank you all for your kindness ❤️❤️
