How to Save Money at Canyons Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Incredible first visit for Chief, my 3 yr old Black Lab, and me. Dr. Moreau and the entire staff were top notch from the first contact. They struck the perfect balance of 'professional and personal' that is so important for our pets ... and us owners. We pass multiple vet clinics between our house and Canyons Vet Clinic...but it's worth the drive. Highly recommend

We came here from another nearby vet clinic because we didn’t have a great experience with them and really wanted somewhere more comforting and personable. We recently rescued our pup Roman and want the best care for him and I am so glad we found Canyons Veterinary Clinic! Everyone was so warm and welcoming, they greeted Roman with such care and you can tell they genuinely care for animals! They answered our long list of questions being new pet parents and were super patient and understanding! I would highly recommend them if you are looking for a long-term vet that truly cares and will help you and your furry friend feel comfortable!!

I just got a new puppy, Churro, and I am always hesitant in choosing a Vet but I absolutely adored Canyons. Right off the bat they were so responsive and easy to communicate with, answered all of my questions via text and got my little man scheduled. From the moment you walk in everyone is super friendly and welcoming and check in was a breeze. Since it was his first visit, in the room they had a cute Kong toy for him, the little things like that stand out to me (plus he loves his little Yak). Churro had a great first visit and I was greatly reassured by the staff and vibe the clinic gave off. He saw Dr. Lucy Wagstaff and she was super sweet and down to earth, got right on the floor to greet him. The clinic was clean and most importantly, since occasionally I have tight time constraints, they were very on time which I greatly appreciated. Very glad that we established with them and that I have a reliable place to trust with the health of my little fella!

I can’t say enough great things about this clinic. From the moment my posse and I walked in, we were greeted with warmth and professionalism. It was also great to see happy clientele around us in the waiting room. The staff’s immaculate communication lasted each step of the way from initial new patient intake to being greeted by the front desk to interacting with the tech and lastly the vet. Their follow-up after our appointment was also a pleasant surprise. The facility is clean and modern. Prices for care are also extremely reasonable. Lastly, I’ve also been told by another customer of theirs that this is one of the few remaining locally owned veterinary clinics around. Bigger companies want to make pets’ health a lucrative industry but this clinic won’t be a part of that machine. Just another reason to support local, women-owned and operated businesses in Salt Lake. :)

I have worked with almost this entire staff on multiple occasions, and they are all fantastic! Tory, Christy, Sinead, Brianna, Dr Wagstaff, and more! Dr Moreau is incredibly knowledgable about double coat dogs and animal health in general so I now take all 3 of my alaskan malamutes (our wolfpack) to this clinic. I'm so happy and relieved to feel like I finally found a longstanding vet clinic that I can trust! I even had my own human medical emergency on my last visit where my back went out and they were so kind, compassionate, and just amazing to help me. They are great with humans too. Haha. Thank you so much!
