How to Save on Veterinary Costs at Veterinary Orthopedic Services
Preventive care
Routine wellness exams can help identify health issues early, often before they become more serious or expensive to treat. Regular checkups are one of the most effective ways to manage long term veterinary costs.
Compare prescription pricing
Some pet medications prescribed at veterinary clinics may also be available through local or online pharmacies. It can be helpful to compare pricing when appropriate to reduce ongoing medication costs.
Consider pet insurance
Pet insurance may help cover a portion of eligible veterinary expenses depending on the plan, including accidents, illnesses, and in some cases preventive care. Coverage details, reimbursement levels, and deductibles vary by provider.

Getting to Know Your Veterinarian
Choosing a veterinarian is an important decision for pet parents. A strong vet relationship is built on trust, communication, and understanding your pet’s individual needs.
Experience
Ask whether the clinic has experience treating your specific type of pet, since care can vary between dogs, cats, and pocket pets.
Emergency Care Procedures
It’s helpful to understand how the clinic handles after-hours emergencies, including whether they provide emergency services or refer to nearby emergency hospitals.
Communication Preferences
Ask how the clinic communicates with pet parents, including updates, test results, and follow up questions.
Breed Specific Health Considerations
Some breeds may be more prone to certain health conditions. Early awareness can help with prevention and early treatment.
Facility Tour
If available, touring the clinic can help you and your pet feel more comfortable before the first visit.

I took my dog to Dr. Dale Smith a couple years ago when she could barely walk and had no quality of life at all. I had been to several general veterinarians who just kept telling me “her hips are fine.” Dr. Smith met me in the parking lot of the clinic building to see the dog walk and he immediately recognized elbow dysplasia. He and staff did surgery within a week. After recovery, my sweet girl did great. She is a little slow, but runs and plays with the other dogs and is able to have a great quality of life. Was just reflecting on how awesome this was for her.

Dr Becker saved my dogs leg. He was hit by a car and the emergency AVC clinic in Salt Lake City told me my 4 month old Australian Shepard’s leg would need to be amputated and I should do it immediately. Brachial plexus injury in his front left arm. After seeing 3 different vets over a 3 week span, all said he would likely lose the leg and there was nothing I could do. Then I took him to dr Becker and everything changed. He was clearly far more knowledgeable than anyone I had seen and told me while there’s no guarantee, I should absolutely not amputate until I gave him a chance because he still had feeling in his paws and there was still nerve function. He did a few more tests and was very informative and honest about everything. After a lot more advice, he suggested I take him to alta dog rehab which I also can’t recommend enough. After 6 months he had almost fully recovered other than a slight limp. He’s now going on 3 and you’d barely ever know he had an accident. And it all cost me a hell of a lot less than if I’d listened to the others and had it amputated. Vets don’t get much better than dr Becker.

My dog Sissy is an 11 yr old boxer. Another vet kept telling me that my dog just had arthritis and nothing was wrong. No one could give me any answers or treatment options that would work. I took my dog to Dr Becker and he told me right away what was going on and that she had a torn bicep that was severely damaged and causing her lots of pain. My dog has recovered from surgery and doing much better. Dr Becker is the most honest and caring orthopedic surgeon. He comes highly rated and everyone recommended him and I can see why. He takes extra precautions when operating on seniors and I am so glad I was able to get into him.

Dr Smith did a fantastic job on my Bengal! She had to have surgery on both her rear legs for luxating patellas, and she was walking normal only 10 days post surgery! She’s so happy now. And I’m grateful for the awesome job. It was also nice to meet him face to face prior to surgery, made me feel more comfortable and confident sending her in there. I’m super happy with the skills and how nice everyone was that I came in contact with.

Very unprofessional and unorganized. My dog was scheduled for surgery. She was NPO and sat in a cage for 8 hours to have Dr. Smith not show up to do her scheduled surgery. Rescheduled and confirmed surgery for later in week; Dog was again NPO until 4:00 in afternoon so she could get the surgery. Dr. Smith came in, examined my dog, confirmed need for surgery and then said would have to be scheduled some other time. No compassion for my sweet dog . She has been in pain and on waiting list for 6 weeks-- and then to have to be put through this. Unfortunate
