How to Save Money at Northwood Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The well informed staff at this clinic is absolutely wonderful and has treated my pup and I like family since day 1. I have been a life long exotic animal keeper (as well as dogs) and this is by far THE BEST veterinary experience I have had in San Antonio. I have multiple clinics in my area and still choose a 40 minutes for this team. The grooming services that Cat offers are extraordinary! She has never failed to amaze me with her quality of work and the passion she shows for her craft. Her work speaks for itself. She treats all her clients with love and I am always at ease knowing my dog is safe with her. I HIGHLY recommend this clinic to anyone in the area.

I took my puppy-child Simon in for a well visit, vaccines, and a groom. I was a bit hesitant because no groomer has ever been able to work with him. (He's aggressive 🤦🏻‍♀️) The staff knew exactly what do and their groomer, Cat, did such an amazing job! I'm beyond thrilled! I will definitely be bringing Simon back for all his care! 🫶🏼

I had my Pitbull’s ears cropped at Northwood based off reviews and compared to the chop shop ear cropping clinic in Houston. Monetarily speaking, the price difference is monumentally higher here at Northwood, but for the post surgery care and attention that they give in the weeks that follow is unmatched and makes every penny worth it. In my opinion, that’s where taking care of cropped ears is critical and this clinic did an outstanding job!

I decided to get my Dobies ears cropped here at Northwood after weighing out my options. The aftercare they give for my boy is excellent and I don’t think I will ever go anywhere else for another ear cropping. At first I was just coming to Northwood for my boys ears to be reposted every week or so, but then I saw the amount of patience they have with my Koba and how HELPFUL they are with everything. So my boyfriend and I decided we should make this our permanent veterinarian office because the staff here is just wonderful. We want to give our boy the very best and that is what Northwood gives!

I came here to get my doberman puppy's ears cropped. I saw the great reviews this place had and decided it would be worth the pricey surgery of $925 for a reputable vet. I am sadly very disappointed with this vet office, not because of the surgery but because of the lack of attention and communication. At first my fiance scheduled an appointment weeks in advance for Monday Dec 7th for a consultation. When he called to confirm the appointment they had no record of the appointment at all! They said they could squeeze us in for a consult on the following day the 8th because the doctor for ear crop isn't there on Mondays. This was a bad sign from the beginning but we decided to proceed with this vet. Every time we go it seems that they forget to tell us important details such as a medication or when the next appointment is or where specifically. They are moving offices and made our appointment for December 28th, 2020 to get our pup's ear sutures removed and ears re-posted at the new office. We received a call a week before the appointment saying they are cancelling our appointment due to COVID reasons and told us to go to their sister-clinic called Town&Country Animal Hospital at the same day and time. This made it sound like everything was taken care of/scheduled. When we asked if this had already been scheduled they said that no we need to call them ourselves. When asked if it was going to cost us anything because the suture removal and the reposting is included in the $925 price they said no it would be taken care of since it's their sister-clinic. Yesterday on the 28th we arrived at Town&Country and the service was horrendous. They said they couldn't remove the sutures because they needed proof of when the surgery was done from Northwood. They tried contacting Northwood and couldn't get ahold of anyone. I had even tried calling Northwood on the day they called me to reschedule and no answer. No way to even get ahold of them. The service in fact was not all taken care of, we were charged a fee for a technician to see our dog at T&C. This was very unprofessional that nothing had been relayed to T&C about any of the services or that the Northwood Clinic had been shut down, supposedly because of COVID. At T&C they reluctantly removed my dobbie's sutures only because we recognized the vet that did the crop was physically present in the T&C office. Also at T&C nobody was trained or willing to post my dog's ears. They posted them and within minutes the post came out completely. Overall my experience with Northwood Animal has been bad. Maybe for other services you'll have more luck! Just make sure to ask lots of questions because they do not give you all the information you need. Also good luck getting ahold of them now because nobody is answering the phone.
