How to Save Money at Converse Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This clinic was very sweet and caring. They’re insanely good at multi tasking, being it’s an ER as well. My dog was a little nervous, but they did their best to make her comfortable. They didn’t try to add a bunch of add ons and they explained different monthly payment options to me as well. I didn’t have to sell a limb to make sure my dog was alright. I was almost accidentally overcharged at the end, as I’m just trying to be in and out. The cashier actually caught that and fixed the error before I even left. This will be a regular clinic for me and my dog now, and every local who values great service should go here too!

I was going to bring both of my cats in on separate days but cancelled the appointment for my second cat after our first experience. One cat had been diagnosed with intestinal large cell lymphoma via ultrasound and had been given a week left to live by a previous vet but the week had passed and she still seemed healthy so we wanted a second opinion. They prioritized my other cat (that is perfectly healthy according to a different vet, he just had an upset stomach) and wouldn't let us swap the 2 appointments, which that in itself was completely unacceptable in my opinion especially since they would've been running almost all the same tests on both so they had the time. They then kept pushing that he might have pancreatitis, even after doing tests and bloodwork that showed none of the indicators of pancreatitis and kept pushing for us to use some different company's ultrasounds to check him out instead of their own. They were extremely pushy and kept saying all the "scary" things to convince us that we needed this ultrasound that would've costed us significantly more than if they just used their own machine or just not have done it because, again, NOTHING showed any indicators of pancreatitis. It honestly seemed like they have a deal with this company and are just trying to hold up their end by pressuring pet parents into it. They then insisted on giving him a Cerenia shot, which we went with because we were terrified already. They failed to warn us about the possible side effects of it (my cat completely crashed for the next 24 hours, wouldn't eat, drink, move, etc.) which caused even more panic in an already stressful time and based on what our other vet told us, that is usually a last resort medication as it is extremely strong, not just for a short burst of an upset tummy with an unknown cause. Mind you, we had already given them all of the information on my other cat so this honestly seemed like a case of trying to take advantage of scared and vulnerable pet parents. I paid $700 just for them to add even more stress to my plate. I absolutely do not recommend this clinic.

I really did loved this place for a good couple years, but unfortunately due to life unexpected traffic I did let the office know I was going to be late, or if theirs was a chance to change the appointment but automatically the rep stated I would be charged additional $50 for a regular check up, speaking with her thru the phone she didn’t care to help out at all, but it is what it is, I do advise to ask series of questions before scheduling appointments from exams, checks up, what’s so ever, Nether am I able to get my dogs chart notes for another vet unless I pay the $50. It’s sad over the years with this place prices went up for my dogs care, please enter this place with caution as they are money hungry, and again always ask for prices

An gela

Two years ago a Cancerous tumor was removed, it broke my heart- now the cancer is back, but aggressive in his lungs. I sat on the floor with my dog, 😭 and the Vet or Vet tech sat with me to understand options, and her experience with an ailing dog. The staff was so compassionate to me and my fur baby. Planning for the end of life care is hard enough, so the extra time and explanations really helped me understand more options.

I would like to state before my concern with this facility, that this facility is beyond caring for your pets and animals. However, if you enjoy being financially stable with pets, then this is not the vet for your family. Multiple occasions with my two dogs have happened where tests, procedures, and other treatments have been performed without consent, reasoning of explanation for need, and not given time to thoroughly critically think if said service was needed. Ending up into a situation where you are FORCED to pay for the service. If mistakes are made on their end such as a WRONG TEST, you’ll still be liable to pay for it AND the correct testing needed for whatever it may be. Lastly, this facility, specifically the veterinarians, love to push and “nickel and dime” as much as possible. Be aware before choosing this place as your family vet.
