How to Save Money at Churchill Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have been going to Dr Mauldin for almost 20 years. He was the only Vet that would see my lil girl’s cat named Garfield one morning when he came home with half his ear hanging off from a fight. That was almost 20 years ago and we recently had to put that cat down by Dr Mauldin. Ever since that day - Dr Mauldin has treated 2 other dogs and another cat up until they died. This guy even offered to come to my house when I was ready to put down a very large dog named Jackson that had gotten old. When Jackson died at home on a Friday night - we were able to bring him to the clinic on a Saturday morning to arrange cremation services for him. We had another lil Jack Russel that needed surgery one time and also had to be put down due to old age. If your looking for a Vet to take care of your families pets - Dr Mauldin will not disappoint you. The staff has always been really friendly and helpful too. We had 2 dogs and a cat have cremation services arranged by this clinic. We only have one dog left from this pack of animals - and she will no doubt continue to see Dr Mauldin until she is reunited with her pack one day. Almost 20 years of various types of animal care from this man and I don’t have a single negative thing to say. He is the best in his profession.

September 30, 2025 Definitely, one of the best veterinary doctors and hospital in the San Antonio area. I took my little six pound chihuahua to this place this morning so the staff and the doctor could perform an annual checkup. For her, the checkup entailed a dental cleaning, annual shots and all the other things you can get done while the animal is sedated. I've added a picture of the view from across the street. Looking forward to getting my little six pound chihuahua, back and hope that should you need a veterinarian you consider this business for your needs. July 3, 2025 I needed to revisit the vet for my pet because she was experiencing a foul smell in her mouth. I've been with this veterinary doctor for more than 20 years. He and his staff do a great job and very customer service oriented and professional. I highly recommend him for anybody in the Blanco Rd and West Avenue or surrounding area. November 2024 Great place to get your your pet care needs addressed. The doctor has been at this clinic for many years. He's very good technically, he's compassionate and he's very good with all animals. His staff is very attentive, professional and customer oriented. I can't say enough about Churchill Veterinary Hospital. I've used them for more than 20 years and have had nothing but great service. I hope you give them a try and your experiences are as good as mine has been.

Churchill Veterinary Hospital has been our pet's primary care since before it moved to it's current location many years ago. The staff are kind, empathetic, genuinely love animals, and know that our pets are our family. Dr. Mauldin is a great person with an upbeat attitude. He is honest about sometimes difficult situations and he doesn't hesitate to reach out to other veterinarians when one of our pets is in great need. I am so thankful for all that the wonderful people at Churchill Veterinary Hospital do and have done to help my pets be at their best.
