How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Simply wonderful. I do not believe a better place could be found for pet emergencies! We live over an hour away, so we called before we made the drive. Believe it or not, the receptionist quickly got a Dr on the line. After a brief discussion we headed south. The care, compassion, and medical attention was great. Everyone treated the animals and their owners like they mattered. I truly wish that a “human” hospital operated with such care! While I hope that I never have to return, if I ever do; I know my baby will be in great hands! Thank you all!!

My dog got into a little tiff with my roommates dog and she had a pretty deep gash on her front paw that needed stiches. I had never been here, but a neighbor recommended them. They were awesome throughout the whole process and walked me through each step of the way. They were also great with my Missy. I forget all the names but I worked with Michelle and April mostly throughout the intake, anesthesia process, and getting the stitches. They were awesome! There was another vet that did the actual stitches and I forget his name so I apologize, but he was great as well. All of you were kind and made sure both me and my pup were comfortable and taken care of. Thank you for fixing up my baby.

It is a horrific experience when you see your cat dripping blood and saliva from the mouth... I thought either my poor kitty had caught some feisty prey that injured him, or perhaps he swallowed something sharp that was lodged in his mouth. I feared he was going to die. Thank gawd for Vet ER Group being open 24/7, I googled the closest open ER for pets and rushed him over there. He was in distress and howling (the carrier def didn't help). Dr. Nickleberry & crew (not sure if more vets or vet assistants, all were amazing as a team) instantly surrounded him and were very quick to get him on the table, take a look at his mouth, and apparently it was a TOOTH that had rotted so it was quickly extracted and my cat felt INSTANTLY better. You can see his demeanor change in the pics. Thank gawd it wasn't something worse. Thank you so much to all the team, the guy who was keeping me calm during this whole situation, the girl assistant that kept checking on me in the private room and giving instructions on med administration, the other girl who was helping hold him still, and Dr. Nickleberry who plucked the tooth like it was candy. Price was very reasonable for ER visit. I feel safe and at ease having stumbled across this place in case of another incident. Now he's back home and getting spoiled more than ever!

We recently experienced the heartbreaking loss of our beloved dog, Lily. While the pain of losing her is still so raw, we are incredibly grateful to the extraordinary team at VEG ER in Allen who cared for her with such compassion and dedication. Lily needed emergency surgery, and Dr. Pina worked tirelessly to try and save her. It was clear how much effort, skill, and care she put into giving Lily every possible chance. We are so thankful for the urgency and compassion that she showed in those critical hours. The following day, Dr. Wilson had the difficult task of delivering the devastating news that Lily wasn’t going to make it. He was incredibly kind and compassionate in one of the hardest moments of our lives. His empathy and gentle manner brought us comfort when we needed it most. Throughout this entire experience, every member of the veterinary team treated Lily—and our entire family—with such tenderness and respect. Their kindness extended far beyond medical care; it was emotional support that we didn’t know we would need so deeply. Thank you, Dr. Pina, Dr. Wilson, and the entire staff, for doing everything you could for Lily and for holding our hearts with such care. We will never forget your kindness in her final moments.

We took our dog Bear here and they were awesome. As soon as we arrived they got to work on our dog to figure out exactly what care he needed. They worked diligently and even called in another Dr to help with resetting our dog’s hip. I am blown away by the compassion and tenacity with which they cared for my dog, but the other animals there. In fact, a very unfortunate event occurred while I was there and they huddled together after the chaos to check in with each other, ensuring that anyone who needed something got what they needed. I also like how you can stay w your pet the entire time. These ppl care about animals and helping them to the best of their ability! Thank you to Dr Woods, Dr Hodge, Alexandria (I think that was our nurses name) and countless others that helped with our sweet Bear.
