How to Save Money at Haywood Road Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Would recommend!! They got my Snow kitty in right away as he was very sick and worked with me to help him to get him better. The were Warm, Caring and Friendly from reception to the Vet tech and Dr Byrd. Thank you all!! Will be switching all of my pets to them when they are due for their next visits.

Haywood road animal hospital is amazing! Dr. Kotani and his team are incredibly knowledgeable and compassionate. The front desk is always kind, attentive, and is very quick to get back to you with any information. They always go above and beyond for my two pups. They genuinely care and i can not recommend them enough. I appreciate all the care they have provided princess & tubs!

Look, I won't sugar coat things. My wife and I acquired a cat, and this cat is in perfect health until it starts having diarrhea after week 1 of ownership. We want to do the right thing and make sure this cat is ok because we haven't had enough time to understand all her quirks and tastes. This vet was recommended by a friend, so we went. Were they nice? Very. Was the facility nice? Yes...almost too nice. Did they charge us $400 and push pills on us? Also yes. The vibe that both my wife and I received was this clinic will almost meet your needs, push pills, and then upcharge. I don't want to rate them 1 star, but 3 stars seem too generous. The moral of the story is, don't feed your cat greenies treats. This was information we discovered after and independent of the vet visit. Greenies will give your cat diarrhea and then you will spend $400 for a vet to run some tests and not ask questions that I think should be asked of new cat owners. Was this our fault? Yeah, probably. But live and learn and don't repeat the same mistakes twice. This clinic was an unsatisfactory experience and we will be looking elsewhere for future solutions. EDIT IN RESPONSE: Nowhere in my review did I say the numerous prescriptions she was given helped. They did not. We took her off Greenies, and the problem went away. We were glad to get the tests done. We were not happy about all the "necessary" medicine that was prescribed.

From the moment I had an interaction with the staff at Haywood Road Animal Hospital I knew they truly cared about my concerns. I was able to come in as a new patient immediately which was such a relief as most other places either weren’t taking in new patients or you had to wait weeks to be seen. From the front desk staff (Rian & Breanna) to the vet techs (Haley & Hannah -I’ve had the most interactions with them) to the doctors (Dr. Hilliard & Dr. Kotani) they really take the time to listen to you and in turn answer your questions, thoroughly explain and give their professional opinion and go over all of your options. I’ve never felt forced or guilted into making a decision I didn’t feel comfortable with. Even though my cat was not a fan of the vet they never took it personal. They really get to know you and your pet and care for them as if they were their own. They’ve even gone as far as to reach out to other specialist for their advise and expertise concerning certain issues my pet was experiencing. I would not bring my pets to any other vet. Thank you again to everyone thats been there for Vinnie and I. ♥️
