How to Save Money at Mohawk Animal Clinic Upper James St.

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Let me preface this by stating the staff were very polite and the waits for emergency care were very reasonable. This was an evening emergency so our regular vet we’ve known for 10+ years was unavailable. My Shepheard was playing and partially tore one of his rear claws from its root. He had torn a dew claw recently so this wasn’t our first time with this kind of injury. We’re new to the region so decided to give Mohawk a try. The staff were very polite and I felt quite comfortable. The vet heard the story and admitted she would be performing the same procedure that had been done by our vet when he broke his dew claw which included cauterizing (Burning) the wound which seals it from bleeding so we knew what to expect. The dog came out with a well bandaged foot. We were offered pain meds for him but surprisingly no prophylactic antibiotics. We took him home. Walked into the house and immediately noticed a trail of blood marks where he had stepped. Inspected his bandages and he was bleeding though the bandage. We added additional bandages. The dog was bleeding late into the evening. The house is covered in bloody spots even with us repeatedly chasing behind him with a mop. On the area rugs, the hardwood, the tiles, up the stair carpet and all inside the backseat of my Infiniti SUV. The bleeding is spotty so we weren't worried for his well being but it was not what we expect after a veterinary procedure. HOW in the world does a cauterize procedure result in constant bleeding?! We’ve been through this with a dew claw only a month ago and had nothing like this. In fact, in 30 years of dog ownership we’ve never seen so much blood AFTER veterinary procedure. We’re considering a formal complaint to the college of veterinarians. So now we know the bandage is covered with dried blood and the wound is somewhat open and us with no antibiotics to protect against infection. After a healthy bill for all of this we now have to go to our own vet first thing this morning to clean up the mess this emergency clinic made and make sure any potential infection is managed. Addendum: We took the dog to our normal vet this morning (Sept 4) to evaluate what had been done by Mohawk and to correct it. I watched 2 vet techs gasp as they uncovered the white nail root (the quick they called it) that had been left behind after the claw was removed. They said the nail root bleeds a lot which explains all of the blood. The quick was fully exposed and in direct contact with the bandages. Put simply, she had removed the hard claw but left the nerve inside the claw attached to the dog’s foot and just wrapped it. Our vet said the procedure can be done this way but its very painful for the dog and exposes the dog to good risk for infections so antibiotics, which were we asked about and were told weren't needed, would be important. $800 bill to perform the full nail removal and cauterize procedure that was agreed to but not done at Mohawk who took near $550. Another Dr called to tell me it was my fault I spent more money because I could have just brought the dog back to them, a statement I find very unapologetic and narcissistic. When I told him I wasn’t giving them a second chance at my dog or an opportunity to cover up bad work, he told me he had 40 years as a vet and he suspected I didn’t so he knew more about it. I exploded that he should be talking down to me like that and reminded him I had his work evaluated by another veterinary professional. I personally found that Narcissistic as well. He refused to refund the bill unless I had my vet write him a letter with their evaluation at which point he would CONSIDER it. Again, I personally found him to be insincere and narcissistic but you have the evidence now so judge for yourself. Our dog has been home for a few hours now from our vet, resting comfortably, and no blood anywhere.

I chose this hospital for the first time because when my cat got sick, it was a holiday and only the Mohawk clinic was open with available appointments. I met very good doctors, nurses, and front desk operators at this clinic, especially the operator's attitude. I think the operator's attitude is very important because when I face an emergency with my cat, I feel scared and anxious. If the operator's attitude is wrong at this time, it will make me very uncomfortable. I am not Canadian, so my English proficiency is lacking. However, when I cannot understand, the nurses at Mohawk even use translation software to translate her words and show them to me. Because I feel well treated at Mohawk clinic, I did not hesitate to believe and chose Mohawk animal clinic when choosing a hospital for the sterilization of my two cats, and spent a total of $1500 Today, when I was consulting about the post sterilization examination of my female cat, the operator was a man. I wanted to ask if the cat needs to be examined and the sutures removed after sterilization. However, the male operator said that if the cat looks fine, there is no need for a re examination. You can tell me that the thread can be absorbed or does not need to be removed. If that's the case, I understand, but I didn't say that and your attitude is not very good. When I hung up the phone for the first time, I was still a bit worried because my cat was like my child, so I called again to confirm if the female cat really didn't need to remove the stitches because the postoperative precautions you gave me clearly stated that female cats need to remove the stitches. When I called for consultation for the second time, your male operator directly tell me to call again tomorrow. I know my English is not that good, sometimes I can't fully understand what you mean, but I don't think this should be the reason why you have a bad attitude towards me. If this wiring attitude continues, I may reconsider whether to trust Mohawk Animal Clinic or not

I brought my cat Morris here after he had a skin rash due to an allergic reaction. Having taken him elsewhere in the past, I was anxious for the cost. His care and same- day fee and was completely reasonable for me! The veterinarian Dr. Lok Wah was very thorough, explained all options and overall put me at ease. Morris is healing rapidly and I am so thankful.

We brought our Great Dane in on Christmas Eve because she wasn’t feeling well. Through blood work they were able to figure out what was wrong with her and gave her something to bring down her temperature and she was fine! They were caring and patient with us and the gentleman who helped us was very clear and concise with everything he was doing and what needed to be done. We really appreciated that. TLDR; They were patient, kind, and accurately diagnosed the issue (on Xmas Eve) and our pup is doing great!

I took my little guy ( dog ) to Mohawk after my regular vet was closed. He came back from The groomers with a squinty eye . It was getting worse as the evening came . I started to look for places i could take him on a Sunday night and only saw bad reviews at Mohawk so I definitely hesitated . Everyone else was fully booked and turned us away . I called Mohawk and Eric picked up the phone . He was so kind and understanding . He mentioned they were booked solid but made time for us . Our puppy ended up having an eye ulcer. It was so hard to get drops in his eyes to the point where he was freaking out amd scared of us . The staff at Mohawk are AMAZING to say the least. They assisted us with his drops , made us feel better about the situation. They were so loving towards our little guy. And I cannot thank them enough !!!! Don’t go based on online reviews !!! I’m glad and thankful i got to Have this experience myself with an amazing group of ppl. Oso and Karen
