How to Save Money at Ohio Alleycat Resource (OAR) & Spay/Neuter Clinic
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We just had our cat Ozzy neutered with OAR. It's the 3rd cat in 15 years my boyfriend has taken and he says even down to the driver, you can tell that these people really love their job. Every single time. It's SO convenient. They will pickup and drop-off your cat at the specified location and its that easy! Very cheap, too. Neuter and rabies shot, +nail trim (free) and it was $75 total. $25 deposit due before the actual date to hold your cats spot. We are so grateful to have them local to us and just for what they are doing for our world! Thank you to everyone at OAR 🫶

I have so much respect and love for OAR! I got my cat here a few years ago and the process was quick and easy. More people should use their discounted spay/neuter services! They do great work for the community and am forever grateful to them for bringing my sweet cat into my life.

(01/28/26)8 month old male cat! Staff was very nice gave me a sheet to put over me! My problem is that my kitty was covered in pee I was told he had a little accident but he was neutered and I didn’t expect to find pissy treats smooshed all over him and his stitches. I understand you get what you pay for but my kitty didn’t deserve to be sitting in a pee filled carrier for god knows how long hopefully there is no infection as the days go by.

BEWARE THEY DO NOT FULLY EXAMINE THEIR CATS BEFORE PUTTING THEM UP FOR ADOPTION!!!! On October 27/2025, we decided to adopt 6 years old Buggs from their shelter who was surrendered by her previous owners for some behavioral issues. Buggs was wonderful and sweet the first day she was home, she used her litter box for both pee and poop, she was eating and drinking, she was purring, we were so happy... On Tuesday the 28 (the next day) we took her to the regular vet to get her examined/established and the vet said she seemed perfectly fine, HOWEVER at around 10pm that same day she pooped outside of her litter box and the stool was very loose and watery. Then a few hours later she vomited 3 times back to back and kept having these vomit attacks almost every hour till 1 am. Ofc we freaked out and took her to the emergency vet to be seen, they checked her vital and said she was running a small fever and after waiting and paying a hefty sum of money (lol) the vet did xrays of her abdomen and said everything looked fine... that it might just be stress or something she ate causing the nausea. They gave her a maropitant shot, told us to give her a bland diet and to monitor her for the next 24 hours. We stayed up all night till 6 am monitoring her (by now it's wednesday oct 29) and thankfully she did not vomit again. Come 10pm (still on wednesday) and she has not eaten a single bite out of her food... we tried everything... boiled chicken, canned tuna in water, churus even her kibble nothing worked she seemed soo lethargic and tired. We took her to that same ER and this time they did an ultrasound which showed that her kidneys are very abnormal and have large cyst-like structures within the cortex. We were very surprised because we trusted AOR's words that they did a thorough examination and blood work which they said turned out fine. The next day we called the shelter to let them know what happened and we were met with the rudest response ever. The person on the phone basically blamed us for taking her to the ER twice and "stressing her out"?? she was literally lethargic, vomited 9 times in 3 hours and was refusing to eat anything within the last 24 hours what else were we supposed to do?? their "suggestion" was that we should've waited and emailed them instead... im sorry??? is that not considered animal neglect???. The whole thing started at around 10 pm on a Monday which AOR were closed by that time btw and they don't open until 12 pm. This agent really expected us to sit there waiting till 12pm the next day to maybe get an "email" response from them when this cat was literally running a fever, having loose stool and constantly vomiting (all major and scary symptoms that any person with a brain would have been very concerned about). We were just baffled, we told them surely this huge cyst did not appear overnight and suddenly grew 10x to the point of putting intense pressure on her kidney just because she was stressed for ONE DAY in her new home. They offered us to take the cat back but at this point I have invested more than $2k on Buggs and spend two nights in a row in the emergency vet to get answers... like her and i are traumatized and bonded for ever now 😂 Honestly we were not expecting a great response from OAR but they should definitely train their employees/volunteers to handle these situations better when it's clearly their fault for not doing their job and running in depth testing to check if their cats are healthy even when they are not showing any symptoms and AOR should know more than anyone else how good cats are at hiding their pain. So no i do not want to give my cat back, I would've loved for them to take some responsibility and offer us a help plan but instead they blamed us for taking her to the emergency vet and stressing her out (whatever that means) this shelter has great reviews and their cats are wonderful just keep in mind they do not do a complete health check on their cats and u might get a sick girl like i did. Anyways here are pics of my sweet little baby
