How to Save Money at Brighton Animal Hospital, PC

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Excellent care by veterinarian. I moved my dog from another practice to Dr. Hawkins at Brighton Veterinary Hospital. I had been unable to find a caring and truly skilled Veterinarian since my own, in another city, retired. Dr. Hawkins is experienced, knowledgeable and empathetic to my dog and me. I cannot recommend her highly enough. Not a "bargain" practice, but a value practice well worth the fees paid.

I have only been with these veterinarians for a short time, but I will say that they're wonderful, caring and give over-the-top service. My poor cat has been hospitalized for most of the past two weeks. I have received a call from one of the vets almost every day, updating me on the cat's status. They encourage questions, and take the time to answer thoroughly. Great front desk staff, as well. They really care! I'm so glad I found them!

I cannot say enough good things about this office. We became clients in 2021 after receiving extremely disappointing care from our previous office of 8 years. Dr Foley and Dr Hawkins have gone above and beyond for my boys and it's obvious how much they care. They're not here to make money, but truly to help you and explain what they're thinking. They're not pushy in their recommendations and support you in what you think it best. The staff as well is absolutely amazing, welcoming and comforting and I am so grateful we have found this practice!!

Been with these folks for over 3 years. Dr. Vamvakia has to be my favorite veterinarian of all time. He's great with my dog Bacca, is always very honest and straight forward but does so with a big smile and great energy. The staff out front is also top notch. The place can be very busy at times yet they do a great job keeping things moving. Lastly there is plenty of grass to walk an anxious dog before taking them inside. I can't say enough great things about this place.

Today we were turned away for a vaccination appointment which takes all of 2 minutes to accomplish and the younger blonde haired girl with glasses picked a fight with me about it stating that "the doctor had left for the day anyways on an emergency" which was completely irrelevant since we were not there for an exam and we were not there to see a doctor. She was looking for an excuse to turn us away and I wish I had gotten her name. I told her I might as well schedule my other dog for his vaccinations since I was forced to reschedule my appointment from today and she gave me an attitude about my availability since the only available appointments were between 3 and 4 in the afternoon which does not work because I work like any other normal person. Her response was "well since you work Monday through Friday that limits you to an evening or a saturday appointment." Yeah no kidding! All of us work monday through friday and sometimes also saturdays, its not that uncommon. When she pulled up my male's information she also said "well he's not due until November do you want to wait?" NO because clearly you have no reasonable appointment times. Turns out there was nothing reasonable until December which is EXACTLY why I wanted to schedule it today. There was no reason to turn us away today, it was not busy and we were not there to see a doctor anyways. Her attitude and tone was rude and borderline discriminatory. I definitely would not allow someone like that to work in my office.
