How to Save Money at Dutchess County Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

First things first, we absolutely love our fur babies! We consider them are our kids and I am sure you do too! We have 3 dogs and 1 cat! We are very protective of them and I can easily be called a helicopter parent! With that being said, it is important to know that We have been with Doctor Haight since her day one. We have been with her and her loving staff for Well over 20 years. There is so much to love about Dutchess County Animal Hospital! From the staff knowing who you are and your “kids” by name as well as their past and current wellness is the kind of place we want to be at. Dr. Haight and her staff are forever answering our questions. I mean always even if we just left the office 10 minutes ago lol. The honestly from the staff is appreciated and comforting. For instance, If the staff does not know an answer to our questions, they will tell us that they do not feel comfortable proving any information and would prefer to reach out to the doctor. And they always call us back in a reasonable timeframe. Recently one of our babies had to go in for ACL surgery. When I tell you we were super scared, nervous and basically crying, Alyssa and Dr. Haight assured us she would be ok and that their surgeon is top notch and Jolee was in good hands. Dr. Haight and her Staff understand us and get the connection we have with our “kids”. During and after her procedure Doc and the staff kept us in the loop in regards to how Jolee was doing! Again I repeat this is the kind of place we want to be! I clearly highly recommend The Dutchess County Animal Hospital! Everyone is super caring, sweet, gentle and always super nice! And like I said, I am an over protective momma so I am not always easy to please ! Thank you Doctor Haight, Alyssa and staff for helping our whole family often and always ! We love and appreciate you all! Alyssa thank you for being you! You were our backbone through this last surgery for Jolee! Happy Holidays and thank you again everyone !

I have been a client at DCAH for so many years I can’t even count! My dogs and cats have always been treated fairly and with care and dignity. Dr Diana always discusses the treatment plan and options with you so you are well prepared for different care scenarios. She clearly explains things and likes an open question/answer dialogue so there are no surprises. Staff on the phone are always pleasant and helpful. My girls and myself developed a wonderful bond with Claire, one of the vet techs. Over the years she has been there for ups and downs and is so compassionate and honest. The love she has for my girls is just so genuine. I honestly can’t imagine going to any other vet practice.

I have only had good experiences with duchess county animal hospital and the staff! Ambrielle has been super helpful with answering all my questions and thoroughly explaining everything related to my babies health. I can tell from her interactions with my fur babies that she is so kind and caring to animals, she truly treats them like her own. Going to the vet is always stressful, but Ambrielle truly helped make the process much more tolerable! I cannot thank her enough.

Went a year and a half ago to take my second pet in about 10 years to get shots. Everything was good. Today I called to see when he is due for his next ones and I was told he was due on dec22 and they will not see my animals because 1.5 years ago I called about my cat having a leg problem and threatened to make a complaint this incident never took place and they documented the wrong chart obviously. They provided me the number which I called from and that number was not mine. But refuse to let my animals be seen. The only other time I spoke to them was 2 months ago when my car ate a mouse and wasn’t feeling well. At no point was there any type of unkindness let alone an issue. DO NOT GO HERE!!! I even offered my phone records for proof even though a different number called them. They never notified me my car needed his shot and he is an indoor outdoor cat!! He is at risk because I was suppose to get a reminder when do. The people there were absolutely nasty when I explained this was not me and refused to put me on with the manager. Finally after many attempts they are going to give the manager my name and number so we will see.
