How to Save Money at Community Animal Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am so grateful for the caring and compassionate professionals who work here. Our 8 month old puppy had to have a procedure and Dr. Rosie and rest of the staff were so patient and talked us through the options with so much kindness. They gave us an overview of the potential costs and made the process of bringing her and picking her up so easy. Everyone I interacted with was friendly, kind and professional. I am 100% confident they truly care about my dogs health and comfort. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.

The staff was incredibly professional and compassionate when I brought in my senior cat who was very ill. They assured me that my decision to allow her to peacefully depart this world would not be the wrong decision. The procedure was streamlined while also allowing me all the time I needed. I am truly grateful for all the support that I received from them.

We were recommend to meet with Dr. Redden at Community Animal Care after taking our cat to the emergency vet with urinary blockage issues. He was previously hospitalized for this issue, so we knew it was time to look further into solutions for him. Upon calling to schedule our appointment, I spoke with Brianna (hope I’m spelling it right!) who was so warm and friendly, and knew our baby’s name right away. When we met with Dr. Redden, we were immediately at ease. He was so gentle with our baby who was in a great deal of pain and took his time to examine him carefully. He was so patient with all of the questions we had and was extremely thorough in explaining the procedure, possible complications, pros/cons, etc. Our consult with him was roughly 45 minutes-an hour, and at no point did we feel like he was rushing us or getting frustrated with our questions. We were/are very mindful that there were other people to be seen, but the fact alone that he truly took the time like we were the only people there was so refreshing and so very much appreciated. After his procedure we spoke with him multiple times and again he was so patient and took the time to go over next steps with us. When we picked him up the next day, his assistant, Heather, was just as incredible! She went step by step what to look for, how to care for him, went over medications and even followed up on an email with questions we had sent. She made sure to take him out of the carrier and show us what everything looked like so we weren’t scared or uncomfortable. We also spoke with Nicole, John, Jeremy and two wonderful ladies who checked us in and out whose names I didn’t get (I’m so sorry!) who were equally as wonderful. We will forever be indebted to all of these people for saving our baby and giving him a new lease on life. 1 billion/10 - do not think twice about bringing your babies here!

The staff is all so nice and friendly. Cost effective and since the hospital closed they’re trying to do a little of emergency help to fill in the gap. I didn’t know what I was gonna do yesterday, I was so worried that I would have to make it to Kingston with my dog in her condition but they offered me the help and support I needed. I couldn’t be possibly more grateful this place. This is what pet care should be! Definitely recommended

I’m so glad I decided to take my dog here. All of the staff is beyond friendly and caring towards my sometimes difficult dog. We have seen three different vets in the practice and they are all great. They listen to what you have to say and give multiple options when it comes to care. They follow up with a call when your pet is sick which means so much to a pet parent.
