How to Save Money at Animal Welfare Association

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My family and I are extremely disappointed, today after 3 days trying to meet Grif, we got some updates and it’s being adopted. We saw griff online on Friday (my son’s birthday) and we went to the shelter trying to meet griff, we were not able to see him because it was too late, so we come back on Saturday at 12am. And Katie in the front desk start asking us multiple questions and pointing that griff is no the proper dog for us, she didn’t allow us to meet him, she suggested multiple times to go around and see other dogs, we spent around 30min saying that griff is the only one, she keep blocking us with questions (we already filled the questions online) she even said that is not the dog for you looking my son eyes!! With Very rude actitud and we can try a different dog! All these in the front desk not with the council and without the opportunity to meet the dog yet. We have to leave because my son’s birthday but he was very sad and she even Change his mind: he said “dad maybe is not for us”really? On his birthday celebration with their friends, thanks Katie. so we decided to come back today, and we ask to meet him, I can still remember the smile on his face saying “it’s been adopted already”. So being my first experience in a shelter, it wasn’t what I expected. I understands that people there are trying to do their job but I am sure there was something else here with this girl.

I had a great experience adopting my kitten from here. The staff is friendly, knowledgable, and helped make the process easier. Adrianna K. was the best!

Staff is always friendly. I have used this location for cats/ dogs spay and neuter. Never had any after care issues. Also over the years have used the pet clinic for shots always affordable they do make recommendations but their not pushy. And now last year I have just started buying my flea and tick medication here! Great place

My cat and myself were treated with such lack of dignity by the red headed female doctor that works here. I made the appointment in person and gladly would’ve picked up any pre-appointment calming medication prior his appointment - except no one let me know this was an option. During the appointment, he immediately sensed the doctor’s off-putting energy. I was spoken to very condescendingly about his behavior and rushed out the door, all while ignoring the reason for the visit. The entire appointment became centered around him being spicy. He was given a shot which he reacted poorly to and shoved back into his crate. I was asked to order prescription food but the order never got approved. I left realizing I had no idea how to proceed since I was brushed off. I went to heart and paw and he was treated with much stronger dignity. Also, the heart and paw vet didn’t think he needed the prescription food at all. I might return for vaccines but not for a sick visit.

Last year our family was looking to adopt a bunny for our 12 year old. She loves rabbits and we decided to visit the AWA. We were impressed with how friendly and helpful the staff was. I loved how clean and modern the facility is. It was clear to us how much the staff cares for each animal. We explained we needed a rabbit who was friendly and easy to handle. The staff recommended the perfect bunny for our family and since we’ve adopted her, she’s become a fast member of our family. This is the place I would recommend to anyone who wants to provide home for a pet. They cater to the needs of the animal by educating the pet owner on how to care for their new pet. They check in to see how the pet is adjusting after adopting. It’s so evident that the staff truly wants to provide the animal with a safe and loving home.
