How to Save Money at Howell Animal Hospital Surgical and Diagnostic Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I usually don’t write reviews and it’s so unfortunate that this has to be done. I brought in my dog for a leg injury 5 months ago. Followed the doctor’s orders from the start and scheduled my dog for a TPLO surgery May 8th. It’s now been 5 months since and I have came to all of the follow-ups and routine visits that comply with the surgery. I have addressed these issues to the vet multiple times and I have not seen an improvement with my dog whatsoever. My dog currently still limps and is not able to go up and down stairs. I have addressed these issues in multiple visits and each time the doctor gives me the run around. The doctor seems to be focusing on other topics other than addressing the root issue. From our last visit the vet, they recommended surgery on his other leg and for what reason??! There was never a problem with his other leg! This place is only concerned with taking your money!! Very disappointed!

I highly recommend Howell Animal Hospital! They’ve saved our cats life more than once, and were so kind, caring and compassionate all the while. Stormy had multiple surgeries at this facility and they treated us so well. Constantly communicating about his condition and calling with updates. I’ll never bring my baby anywhere else. Dr Hussein is SUCH a caring person, we’ve never seen such compassion from a Veterinarian! He literally nuzzled his nose to Storm during a visit, it melted my heart. You won’t find another vet like this man, he’s truly one of a kind and he and his staff moved mountains to save our cats life when Garden State wanted 6000 just to admit him and told us flat out he’d most likely be euthanized at night. 4 years later Stormy's a happy 14 year old thanks to Dr Hussein and his amazing staff at Howell Animal Hospital who wouldn’t give up on stormy when everyone else did. We love you guys!!

My Yorkie , Buddy, had a dental cleaning with several extractions. He very much needed it. I can’t believe how wonderfully he is recovering. We were hesitant to have the procedure done because he is quite old. I brought him in at 8:00am and by 3pm he was back at home doing beautifully! Dr. Hussein and his staff are caring and professional. I’m so happy to have found this animal hospital and highly recommended it! Janice Van Orden from Manchester NJ

Dr. Hussein and his team are top notch! He is very honest and always gives his opinion based on what is best for your pet- not his pocket. I highly recommend Howell Animal Hospital to anyone.

Incompetence and Dishonesty. My cat is 14 years old, had him since he was a kitten, always a healthy cat. He started to cry when I brushed his lower teeth. I recently moved to the area and went with this Vet for a checkup based on their great reviews🙄. The doctor started a physical exam and within seconds said he suspects a stomach tumor. He then examined the mouth and said he needs to have 3 teeth extracted. If you are reading this, your pet is probably family, so you can relate to how devastated I felt. The next day I took my cat to a different Vet for a second opinion, the Vet said he did not feel anything in the abdomen that would be suspect of any tumors, he examined my cat's mouth and said one tooth may need extraction but he would need to xray his mouth to confirm. It's been over a month since I took my cat for the check ups and he is absolutely fine. Howell Vet also charged me $15 extra for "medical waste", (which the other Vet did not charge), the only waste used was a pair of disposable gloves. I questioned the charge and was told its "the law", a lie.
