How to Save Money at Northwoods Pet Care Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

What an amazing staff! They got my sweet boy in as a new client on an emergency visit and fixed him right up after he had a tussle with a dog twice his size. The doctor was so kind and informative, the techs were absolutely amazing! Everyone was so friendly from reception to the vets! Thank you all so very much for being so sweet to Inky and I both!

We recently switched vets to go to Northwoods and after our first visit; it was worth it. They're so friendly and know what they're doing. The doctor didn't rush and made sure we understood everything that was going on. Their prices are reasonable and even gave our new sweet babe a puppy toy. We were referred and will continue to refer others to Northwoods!

We absolutely love this place. They are always so friendly. We have 5 dogs and we bring them all here. We have had to bring our doggos in for regular checkups, vaccinations and surgery and every single time the staff has been kind, patient and caring. I very highly recommend this place for fur baby care. We brought our cat in recently with health complications and they were so quick to not only get a diagnosis, but to find the right treatment option. Our fat cat was not in the mood to be poked and prodded so they simply waited to take his temp until after the exam so he had a chance to calm down. 10/10 recommend

I am new to the Sanford Lake area and today @ 0800, I called around to see if my cat could get in to be seen and everyone was booked, so I started reaching out 45 minutes away. I finally got a hold of Northwoods Pet Care Center. They told me I could bring my cat in at 2:30, but a $73 deposit was required to hold the slot and it would go towards any care needed at the appointment. I was never told if I changed the appointment that I wouldn’t get my $73 back. An hour later, at approximately 9:00 am, I was able to get my cat in somewhere closer to my home. I phoned Northwoods and told them that and they told me that I wouldn’t get my money back. In my opinion, this is a terrible practice. I spoke to the owner and she told me that she does that, so she doesn’t get burned, I explained that there should be exemptions and that this is an ethical matter, which she didn’t care about. Because in the end, they had 5 hours to fill the slot. In my opinion this place isn’t really in business for our furry family members, they are only in it for the money. Which is a shame since not only did I have to shell out $400 + on top of the $73 that I spent for no service. Not good, or reasonable.

We take all three of our cats here for their veterinary care. The office staff is always kind and helpful, and the vet techs and veterinarians listen to our concerns and treat our pets well. Their pricing is reasonable and I like that they have an emergency line.
