How to Save Money at Cambridge Cat Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have taken both my Mother's Cat and mine to this Clinic, both have seen Dr. Kimberly Levine and I have to give it up to her for doing such an amazing Job throughout the years that I have known her. She is very careful, knowledgeable and did an amazing job getting the unfortunate Mats out of my Mother's Kitty's fur in the backside, did her nails quick - yet efficient (She does NOT allow anybody to give her, her Mani & Pedi 😂 🙁) and also recommended several goals to keep her Happy and Healthy.. Thank you to this Clinic & their entire Staff, they do great work. 🙏👏 🐈 * Meme on her walk home ↓ 😸🐾 *

Wonderful veterinary office. Took my kitty here to establish as a new patient and make a plan to help keep her healthy as she enters her senior years. Dr. Kupper and Eugene were very helpful and patient, taking the time to answer my questions, gently examine my cat, and come up with a plan together. The front desk staff was also friendly and the environment is lovely and calming for anxious kitties. The price is reasonable for the quality of care as well.

Brought our cat here when we moved to Boston, and it was incredibly overwhelming. Our cat is very old, who was a stray for most of her life (as far as we know). We were met with an overwhelming number of things wrong with her, and suggested to pursue very aggressive treatment for an onslaught of issues. We stuck with them, knowing how they are experts in cats and that we want the very best for our baby. We wanted to take a more conservative approach to treatment— our cat is old and very small and we worried about how an aggressive approach may be more harmful than good for her. That being said, we were open-minded and started/amended several different medications and have deferred any kind of really invasive treatments, such as surgeries/radiation for her stable thyroid that was not urgent. From the beginning, it was suggested we see a cardiologist for her minor heart murmur and elevated blood pressure, but with her blood pressure becoming stabilized and our cat showing NO signs of heart disease, we decided to wait it out. Then at one visit to check her BP, the vet sprang on us that she heard a “progressive arrhythmia”. It felt so out of nowhere and very disingenuous, especially considering no other vet had brought it up. Dr. Levine made it out as if our cat had weeks to live, and that we need to see a cardiologist ASAP. It was incredibly alarmist yet incredibly insensitive, and looking back, I feel very off about the whole thing. We called a dozen cardiologists and took the soonest appointment at a place in NH 2 hours away, taking off work to bring our cat (plus weeks of absolute anxiety that she would just drop dead). When we went to the appointment, the cardiologist seemed quite shocked about the referral, stating that her heart looks GREAT for her age, and she heard and saw absolutely NO sign of arrhythmia or heart disease, and told us we were doing a wonderful job taking care of her. I spent two months of rent that I don’t have to drive 2 hours away and take a day off work because our vet has this strange vendetta against us. Not to be a accusatory, but I find it interesting how they kept pushing seeing a cardiologist for her elevated blood pressure and when we wanted to wait it out, considering she was doing good, suddenly she supposedly had weeks to live. Whenever we brought up concerns (like long-term steroid use, or concerns about her thyroid levels considering she has a history of it fluctuating even when on medication, and we can usually tell when they’re off by her behavior), they were met with dismissive and paternalistic responses. After the heart arrhythmia incident, we decided to bring her to our dog’s vet, and it felt like such a relief. Funnily enough, the vet was confused as to why she’s on such a high dose of steroids for so long, and we started to taper (and she’s doing so much better!). They checked her thyroid levels (which CCC kept dismissing us about) and they were incredibly low. Dr. Levine seems to have some weird power complex going on, our appointments were always met with guilting and anxiety and as if we don’t know what we’re doing/we’re not taking good care of our cat (this cat is our LIFE and every other vet we’ve ever seen have noted what good care we give her). They are constantly pushing and pushing these invasive (and $$$) treatments and when we bring up a concern they hadn’t caught, it’s met with annoyance or doubt. I’m so glad we decided to go elsewhere. Also, the receptionist is always so rude and impatient and constantly acts as if we are inconveniencing her. She openly talks badly about people while they are on hold very loudly. I know how the vet industry is incredibly stressful, but it rubs me the wrong way. I’m so glad that other people have had positive experiences here, and I love that they have a speciality in cats, and I DON’T suggest not going here. But I hope for those who read this and feel similarly to know, that it’s NOT you, and to trust your gut and get a second opinion/try out another vet.

I can’t describe how lucky I feel to find Cambridge Cat Clinic for my cat Romeo. The staff and the vet there are always patient and caring. Every time they explain in details about Romeo’s condition, and how and why certain treatments are taken. I feel my cat has been treated as a real patient with love. Special thanks to Dr. Kupper for taking care and treating Romeo.

This place is amazing! My cat is an absolute menace and hasn’t let anybody but me touch her since she was 1yo. I brought her here and Dr. Levine was able to do a full check in - even looking at her teeth and rubbing her belly. I took a picture as evidence because I was so shocked and I knew none of my friends would believe me! They also went above and beyond to get me an international health certificate for Kenya. They had to call the USDA, ship the documents, and get me in for an appointment within the required timeframe. I cannot recommend this vet enough!
