How to Save Money at VEG ER for Pets

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Incredible experience from intake to discharge even under extreme stress. These guys saved my cat's life and let me be by her side every step of the way. Initially, our wait time was a little long for being late at night, only because they fast tracked a dangerous and time sensitive condition in another pet, which I understand and completely respect. Seeing that actually gave me even more faith in the quality of care. Once it was our turn, they quickly examined and grabbed samples to determine the cause of her symptoms as soon as possible. Once we were narrowed down to kidney problems, a plan of attack was immediately formulated and implemented. Though my best friend of sixteen years had to be hospitalized, I have never trusted anyone more with her health and wellbeing than the staff at this establishment. They did everything they could to make her comfortable for her two night stay, letting me leave my jacket with her and even offering to let me stay the night just to be close. While I did have to decline as I had another cat at home, they let me know about the generous open door policy which I took advantage of. I was involved in her care from treatment even when I wasn't there with regular updates and wonderful photos which I'm probably getting framed. Overall, there's nothing in this world like seeing the life come back to your furry friend, and VEG made it possible for us. Thank you!!

I cannot express how appreciative I am for how VEG allows for owner to be involved. I called many times to ask questions, clarify treatment plans, get updates, and even ask when to bring Harley in initially. Each and every time I was able to speak with a doctor. That was HUGE! And VEG allowing me to be physically present with Harley as he went through his hospitalization was also huge. Thank you for the care and thoughtfulness of how this is a process for owner as well as fur baby. Much appreciated!!

Anna from the front desk in Cambridge helped me get the loan started while I was panicking. She’s a life saver. Same with Cassie, she got me food and soda and helped ME (the human) out a ton. Doctors Perry and West were super professional, and the technicians were incredible. If I ever have to go back to the veterinary emergency room this is the first place I am going, VEG exceeded my expectations and then some. We had our own room to stay in the entire time, just really a great experience given the emotional rollercoaster of having a pet be unwell.

Dr West, JJ, Danny and the Concierge ( sorry for not recalling her name), were all very attentive, professional disarming and focused! I drove over 35 miles to bring my distressed Yumi to their care. I am very glad that I did! 48 hours later, she is 100% better, and almost back to herself. Thank you VEG, Cambridge MA!!

VEG was probably one of the best emergency animal hospitals I’ve been to. Our male cat was squatting around the house and we immediately knew what that meant. He had a urinary blockage and could not pass his pee and needed to be manually drained or the pee would back up and cause kidney damage. We called the front desk to speak with a vet tech who told us we need to bring him in immediately. We brought him in and were so overwhelmed but everyone was so kind to us. They got to work on him immediately with no wait and were able to start administering pain meds to make him comfortable. Of course the cost for treatment was very high and both my partner and I lost our jobs that week so we were extremely distressed over the cost. The receptionist helped talk through financing options which we ultimately ended up doing while we wait for pet insurance reimbursement. They allowed us to watch the procedure and hold his paw and rub his head as they helped him which I thought was really cool but also transparent and kept us calmer. They gave us snacks and water and told us we could even tat at the night but we decided to go home to our other cat and come back in the morning. Duffy stayed 2 days in the hospital and we were able to visit as many times as needed and he was so happy to see us. They also would text us photos and funny little updates about Duffy which was so sweet. He’s back at home recovering and we cannot stop talking about how great this hospital was truly. I wish they were a regular clinic as I would just bring my cats in for regular checkups if I could!!!! I cannot thank the VEG staff enough for what they do.
