How to Save Money at Orland Park Small Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am not one to leave negative reviews, but this has to be said about this place. They dont even deserve the 1 star in which its making me give to leave the review. What I'm about to say is the absolute BIGGEST regret in my life and what I want EVERY pet owner to be very cautious of. I brought my dog in to have his teeth checked to be cleaned. They did bloodwork, everything came back great and I went to the desk to make the appointment. I thought it was going to be within a couple days of the bloodwork, however, they scheduled my dog almost "1 MONTH" later for his cleaning. When I questioned that, the lady at the desk told me that's how they do that. So I dropped my dog off first thing in morning the day of his appointment and didn't get a call to pick him up till 430 that day. When I got him, he seemed very lethargic, and I chalked it up to him possibly being in pain or the anesthesia wearing off. I called the vet back the next day and said something wasn't right. He was vomiting and just wasn't himself. They told me it was the meds wearing off and to call back in a couple days if he wasn't better. So I called back 3 days later, they told me to bring him in. I brought him in, he was given a shot to make him stop throwing up, and I was given entyce to help him get his appetite back. No bloodwork was done, no exam, just a shot and I was sent on my way. They also charged me for the visit, which I thought was wrong because it was a follow-up from issues of having his teeth cleaned. Now one week goes by and still no improvement. I ended up rushing him to an Emergency vet because now he wouldn't stop vomiting, was drinking water excessively, and he was shaking uncontrollably. I was absolutely terrified. I get him to the ER vet at 1130pm and 30 mins later, they tell me my dog was in KIDNEY FAILURE! My perfectly healthy dog was shutting down and dying. Had this place done bloodwork or an actual exam when I brought him back for a check-up, maybe something could’ve been done. Instead he was just given a shot to stop him from vomiting, which all that did was mask the problem for 3 days! I am so ANGRY AND HEARTBROKEN! MY PERFECTLY HEALTHY DOG was pretty much dying and this place did nothing to help him. I know their prices are more reasonable than others, but guess what, you get what you pay for. Biggest mistake and biggest regret of my life bringing him here. I will NEVER take another pet of mine to this place and I have warned many people I know to take their pets elsewhere. Word of advice, pay the extra money for a place to properly take care of your pet. This place is so run down and out of date, I don't even know if they have the proper/up to date equipment to do these types of procedures. My dog ended up passing away. Unfortunately there was no way to save him because the damage was already done because someone didn't think to do their job properly. I am absolutely disgusted, angry, and heartbroken by the way my dog and I were treated. I trusted these people to care for my dog properly, and they didn't. Please think twice before bringing your pet here for a teeth cleaning or for anything for that matter. And anywhere you go, make sure the bloowork is done right before the appointment. If you love your pet, please pay the money to have them treated properly. I wish I would've and that decision is one I will have to live with for the rest of my life!

I hate to leave a negative review, but it’s important for pet owners to be aware. I took my cat here a few months ago for a check up, because I noticed one of his lymph nodes in the neck felt larger than the other. He is a young and otherwise healthy cat, but I wanted to have some testing done on this and the vet shrugged it off and said it’s “normal”. Any concerns I had weren’t taken seriously. Appointment felt rushed. I decided to believe her, which is my fault. Fast forward to a few months later and I noticed my cats lump was NOTICEABLY larger. We took him to a different vet and he does in fact have an enlarged lymph node and will need all this testing now while we try to figure out the cause. I left two stars because the pricing at this location is very affordable compared to other vets. I would just caution other pet parents to really push for having your concerns listened to. You know your pet best, insist on additional testing if you know something is wrong or go elsewhere.
