How to Save Money at VCA Aurora Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have four dogs so I had to split up their wellness exams. Both GP doctors and their techs were amazing. They took great care in making sure my pets were calm and comfortable for both vaccines and blood draws. Lots of treats, sweet voices and a ton of head pats. Love the team here would recommend them always.

Almost a year ago, our boy Ralph developed a partial tear in his ACL. Due to his size, our primary vet could not do the repair and referred us to VCA. I have only taken my dog here once for what I felt was an emergency and had a decent experience. I first met with Dr Corrie and her tech. They did an exam on Ralph and reviewed his X-rays. Instead of going straight to surgery, since Ralph was still walking and didn’t seem to be in pain, she said no rush or need to do surgery right then and there. I appreciated that because I felt like she was treating him honestly rather than having us do surgery right away. I always enjoy doing the conservative route first. Eventually, Ralph needed TPLO because he was limping more and his leg was getting atrophied because of the lack of muscle use. I called VCA and they were promptly able to get his surgery scheduled. The staff has been so wonderful and communicative. I talked a few times with the surgery coordinator and any questions I asked she responded right away and even emailed me some requests I had. They called me when Ralph was going into surgery and Dr Corrie called me when she was done operating. I received updates that night on how Ralph was doing, and it warmed my heart to hear that they thought Ralph was “such a sweet boy”. The tech even explained that Ralph was a little disoriented when he woke up, so she laid with him and covered him in blankets, which is his favorite thing. I almost cried because I thought it was so sweet! Come the following Monday, they called me and wanted to see how Ralph was doing. I appreciated that. The surgery team has been so wonderful. I would highly recommend their specialist and the techs.

We took our dog to VCA for emergency surgery due to internal bleeding caused by a tumor. We were really worried to leave the dog over night after such an intense surgery. The VCA team was so kind that they let us call at all hours of the night to check on the dog and even sent us photos with him. They also allowed us to take our dog outside into the grass before surgery to have a nice moment with him before his surgery. All around a very caring team and a very professional and helpful surgeon. All around great experience!

My boy Dave tore his ACL back in January as soon as we moved from Colorado, We scheduled his consultation and Dr.Abel was able to perform the TPLO surgery that day! We have a long road to recovery but Dave is already able to use stairs (assisted of course) and he’s walking around with no major issues. I was so appreciative at how communicative the surgery staff were and they welcomed my phone call to check up on him after his surgery. I am so absolutely grateful for the VCA team ♥️ *Edit* As of July 15th, Dave is chasing his new 4 month old puppy brother around until THE PUPPY gets worn out. I am forever grateful to Dr.Abel and all that he’s done for Dave. Dave has a new 4 month old puppy brother and wears him out. It so heartwarming seeing Dave be able to run around again to bond with his new little brother. Thank you so much Dr.Abel, Dave and I appreciate you and so does his new little brother Arlo! (:

I have a big German Shepherd dog who has bit of a habit of getting into trouble and sustained trauma and injuries to his joints and muscles, he had made a few visits here and was looked at by Dr John Peacock, finally had his surgery done a couple of days ago, I must say Dr Peacock and orthopedic team at this location is amazing, they did a great job and released my dog with thorough set of instructions and post surgical care, they provided updates while dog was in the resting area after the surgery until his release the next day. Very professional and kind staff, I didn't have to wait for anything, checking in and out was smooth and fast.
