How to Save Money at Indian Prairie Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This was my first time here. Also, a first time being to an animal hospital that takes exotic pets! Upon walking in the ladies up front were very nice and friendly. The waiting room and my patient room were very clean. I only waited a few minutes to see the doctor. Dr. Benson and his assistant were very helpful. Dr.Benson took over 20 minutes to sit with me and was genuinely concerned with what I had to ask. He was very knowledgeable in everything about the baby bearded dragon I brought in.He took a good look at him. I will be back in 6 months for his checkup. Overall, a wonderful facility with happy and knowledgeable staff. This was a great experience for me and my exotic pet. I left knowing exactly what I had to do and wasn’t pressured into anything extra. Such great people, thank you!

I took my hamster in last minute here for a weird abscess. Dr. Ernsting handled her so well and gave antibiotics that took care of the abscess and my hamster recovered and is doing amazing months later! Here's an after and before!

I can’t thank you all enough for taking care of our Maggie Moo the last few years. Thank you for staying late when we had to say goodbye. I highly recommend this vet. They are so caring and knowledgeable. I got this card today and added it to her table. You guys are all amazing! THANK YOU!

I actually came here way back in 2015 so this review is quite old but still valid. They worked in my 11 year old cat that I suspected had pyometra (fyi - spay your pets people. I was still in grade school when my family got her so I wasn't in a position to do it myself). Dr. Sam was able to quickly confirm that she did and said he'd work her in the next day for surgery. Surgery went smoothly and she went on to live for another 7 years. ❤ Dr. Sam also treated my rat when she was having some upper respiratory symptoms. He's a wonderful vet, and the entire staff has always been nothing but friendly and professional. When I later euthanized my rat the staff was so understanding and so nice - I know it seems silly to become so attached to a rat but they're wonderful animals. Their compassion made the process so smooth. At that time I also didn't realize a lot of vets will send out sympathy cards after a euthanasia, but it was a really pleasant surprise. The staff was also very clear when I had signed up for a Care Credit card to pay for my cat's surgery that I should pay off the surgery in 6 month's to avoid any interest from accruing. As a 19 year old who hadn't had a credit card at the point, I really appreciated their emphasis on that. I was quick to pay off the balance and experienced no issues.

I took my cat to see Dr. Ernsting and he was very informative and helpful. I could tell he was very knowledgeable about cats which made me feel like we were in good hands. The other staff were great as well! I would absolutely recommend going here.
