How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My sweet baby got sick in the middle of the night and VEG was very close to where I live. From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed and I knew that my baby would be in great hands. The doctor and staff are extremely kind and compassionate and will treat your baby as one of their own. The open concept they have is mind blowing! The one thing I hate the most about veterinary places is how I can't be with my baby comforting them and not knowing what is going on behind the closed doors. You will not find that here, you will be by your baby's side the whole time. While I hope I won't have to return to see them, I will never go anywhere else in case I have another emergency because they are absolutely THE BEST. As in regards to price, no emergency vet is going to be cheap, even regular veterinary expenses can be high. Just as for humans, they are DOCTORS. You're paying for their knowledge and experience. This comes with owning an animal and/or having a child. Just as you may have insurance for your child, get insurance for your pets. Thank for VEG for taking care of my baby!

I HIGHLY recommend VEG on Johnson Ferry! I had to take my bulldog in there for an emergency surgery. They took excellent care of her as well as me. This facility had only been open for 12 days when I took my sweet Mary Todd in and it was so organized and clean. I love that they never make owners leave their pets side either! I am happy to say she is recovering well and truly appreciated Dr. Colman reaching out to me to check on her the following day. Excellent facility and even better staff!

We brought our dog Leo into VEG yesterday because he woke up having seizures yesterday morning. He was 14 years old so we knew that more than likely he would not make it but we really wanted to try everything we could to save him. We did end up having to put him down and the staff was very friendly and sympathetic throughout the process. The reason I give a 3 star review instead of a 5 is because I feel that the original pricing that they gave us was absolutely way too much. It was originally going to be $1,500 for the treatment they provided and the cost of putting him down. When we told them that we could not pay that much we tried applying for financing and were unable to get it. After being denied financing through a couple different companies they worked it out with us to pay half of this amount. From the time we walked in the door money was number one to them. I believe if they ultimately wanted to save Leo they could have but they didn’t want to because we didn’t want to pay the extremely high prices. I understand that every one has to make a living but I believe it should be more fair priced. I am thankful that they reduced our bill but I am concerned that others who are not willing to negotiate the price will pay way more than they have too. Just be cautious when you take your pet here and know that the original price is going to be extremely high.

My golden child had sudden persistent vomiting/diarrhea when I got home from work two days ago, so after worrying about him all night, we traveled to VEG in the middle of the night for our first ER visit (next time I will call first so I can check in online before we get there to get the ball rolling). We were triaged quickly and he even got to hang in my lap while he got his fluids. Communication was great, offering both complete diagnostics and more conservative treatment options, with estimates along the way. We were very comfortable in our exam room, and after a follow up with his vet the next day, he’s now back to himself and we are both so relieved. Understand that no emergency vet is cheap, but quality of care and immediate treatment at 1AM will always be worth it to me!

I am so so so relieved to have found this Vet for my chinchilla. They were nice and friendly from since I called them til I left the door. We were greeted by everyone in the clinic and felt really welcomed. Clara, Dr. Dowell and Dr. Adam were amazing!!!!!! We got brought to our room right away. There was basically 0 wait time between treatments. We had vitals done, eye stain to check for damaged cornea, and prescribed a medication. Our chinchilla was wiggling everywhere and giving them quite a hard time but they handled everything so well. They were very transparent and let me know that they were asking for opinions from other Vets at the moment. I was surprised at how quick it took. The price is ofcourse not cheap but it makes sense for a 24hrs emergency service. And I was just so happy to have found one! (Background: my chinchilla hasn't been able to open his eyes for 2 days and I desperately wanted to take him to a Vet. I called around and noone takes chinchillas or have availibility today. I didn't want to wait so I kept calling and found VEG at Marrietta.)
