How to Save Money at VCA Alton Road Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Anamercy Martin is great!!! She did more for my pets than the first two vets (not at VCA who wasted time and $$$). The staff is great and friendly. My cat was really sick and when I called, they had no appointments available for about a week. I emailed the the Dr and she took her dinner break time to see my cat the same day. For my sick dog, I would email the Dr all the time (with photos and so) and she would promptly respond as we tried to get to the bottom as to what was making him sick as we tried different meds to help him.

This animal hospital is wonderful. They are open late and are so humane. You can tell they all really love animals. My dog was limping so I rushed her in as soon as possible. Dr. McKim did a thorough exam and saw her right away. I couldn't be more grateful for them seeing my pup so fast and being so kind through the worrying situation. This care is affordable, but most of all quality care. Superb staff. Thank you from Sasha and me!!!

This place is great. I chose this animal hospital when I got my 8 week GSD. My vet was Dr. McKim who is amazing. Took her time to explain our new puppy journey to my bf & I. Made great recommendations and is so patient with owners questions. She is very calm and sweet. My puppy is always comfortable around her. Their vet assistants are also super sweet. I decided to also book my 8yr old cat an appointment here for a tooth extraction. My cat is not as friendly when in an uncomfortable situation such as a pet visit & he is a big, strong, chunky boy. He felt super comfortable with Dr. McKim, even laid on her paperwork and asked for cuddles. I feel secure taking my pets there & I'm happy I found this place. Prices seem relatively fair for the area and compared to other vet locations in Miami. Overall, I'm happy with the service & that my pets are safe & taken care of.

The Veterinarians at VCA Alton have provided good care for my dog, and I am pleased with their work. The front desk staff, however, is a different story. Even though they are well-staffed, they are constantly disorganized and inefficient. Wait times in-person and on the phone are unnecessarily extended. Medications promised at a certain time are almost never ready. Most recently I called ahead to see if I could pick up probiotic. The front desk staff confirmed availability, and told me they would put it aside for me to pick up. Upon arrival just one hour later, I was informed that they had run out of the product well before my call. Just one more frustrating experience especially after walking over since parking at the location is a disaster.

Not sure about doctors but service is just HORRIBLE! They do not respect their customers time! Got appointment 2 weeks ahead!! So 50 min to get there from Sunny Isles beach.. okay then at the register they did not mention that I had to wait about 50-70 min for a doctor!! Karl 50 min!!At this point they should have told me that they are running behind of the schedule which would be respectful! No they invited me into the room and I was sitting there 40 min then I had to go because I have planned my meetings and my day based on the apoitment time. I cannot just sit and wait for a doctor when I had my appointment done at a specific time. So ..And doctor never showed up! I just left and receptionist was like oh the doctor will be available at least in 20 min. So the wait time would be min 1 hour. Who does that? Respect people’s time! I just wasted 3 hour of my time and my dog didn’t get her check up. Never ever go there again. There are plenty of great vet places. So if you have nothing to do in your life then go and waste half of the day and pray to see a doctor!!
