How to Save Money at Thompson's Veterinary Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

It was my puppy's first visit and Dr. Thompson and staff did their best to make it a good experience for her. She was very nervous being at a vet for the first time and I was unable to get her nails trimmed as I had hoped but got some good information and will return for a second visit in hopes that my dog will get used to going to the vet. Liked Dr. Thompson's idea of "happy" visits.

I would give zero stars, but that’s not an option. The vet, Dr.Thompson was rude, not caring, not compassionate and made it feel as though we were a bother for even bringing my moms dog in. My mom has been worried because her dog wasn’t acting right, he is almost 14 years old, and he was having problems walking, getting up, and crying out in pain all the time. His regular vet couldn’t get him in for a few more weeks, so my mom reached out to Thompson vet because they had seen her dog about 2 years ago and they were able to get in him the next day. When we got there, we asked for help getting her dog out of the car because we had trouble lifting him and didn’t want to cause any more pain to him, the front desk said someone would come out and help, after a while of waiting and waiting, no one ever came to help. We finally got him out of the car and into the waiting area to get checked in. Once checked in we waited for the vet, she called us back and we were once again unable to get him up and standing to walk due to his excruciating pain. The vet didn’t help us, she looked at us as though we were incompetent and rolled her eyes when we asked for a blanket or towel to help him up. Instead of helping us get him up, she basically tossed us a towel(which was barely even handed to me) and in a very bossy manner, told us how to get him up and that we were doing it wrong, instead of coming to help us, she just stood there at the doorway and watched. Once in the room, she still didn’t help us get him on the scale or stand him up or anything. She kept making comments about she doesn’t know what’s wrong with him because she hasn’t seen him in 2 years and she’s never done blood work on him. We felt as though we were a bother and that she was mad because we brought him there. The only good thing she did for us was refer us to an amazing vet in Dundee who was caring and compassionate and found out what the problem was. During this time, we found out my moms dog has cancer in his spine and a sciatic nerve issue. Dr Thompson was very unkind, uncaring and not compassionate in the slightest way, while we were emotionally upset and worried about my moms dog. Regardless of how long it’s been, you should never treat patients like this. The only good thing from going to this vet was that she sent us to another vet that actually took the time and cared about not only my moms dog, but us and our feelings as well.

Dr. Thompson and her staff are superb at making you and your animal feel comfortable. Their concentration on your animals comfort and efforts to eliminate stress for them is exceptional. They have an actual bengal cat as their full time resident and greeter. Great place to take your animal family members when they need healthcare.

Not sure how there are so many high reviews. It is dirty and smells quite bad inside. Attitudes aren’t great either. Was asked to wait outside after being there for 30 minutes because a reactive dog was coming in for an appointment time after mine. Vet spends very little time with your animal and is quite hands off. Not a recommended first choice. Would not take my kid to an unclean and passive doctor just as I would not take my fur baby to a vet like that.
