How to Save Money at Victoria Park Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I selected Victoria Park Hospital shortly after we moved to the beach many years ago. Dr. Birken and her staff were always wonderful. However, it was not until a couple of weeks ago that I realized that this hospital is not just good, it has the biggest heart. We had to make the very painful decision to put our sweet Emma to sleep. We were devastated. The way Dr. Kushner and Dr. Birken, plus the whole staff, handled everything was not only professional but extremely kind. I will recommend them always. They did their best to handle our situation with the outmost care and respect. We will be forever grateful.

Two years ago I brought my 13 year old Husky in for incontinence. After extensive bloodwork, urinalysis tests, and finally an ultrasound, I found out what I thought would just be a simple UTI was actually cancer. Both Dr Birken and Dr Cushner explained the various treatments and possible outcomes/risks so that I could make an informed decision. Ultimately I went with surgery to remove the mass. Everything went well and my baby recovered quickly. I can't express how grateful I am to the doctors and their staff for saving her life. The experience even pushed me into pursuing a new career in veterinary medicine. Indy is now 15 and getting on in her years but they gave me 2 more years (and counting) with her that I wouldn't have if not for their care, knowledge, and compassion for animals.

Staff is very friendly. I was able to call and get a last minute appointment. They were wonderful with my Great Dane. Got all vaccines updated will definitely be returning for our future veterinary needs. Conveniently located.

Honestly, if I could give zero stars I would. My first time visiting this animal hospital, they ran way behind schedule, the Veterinarian was very rude and when I asked about how to obtain a health certificate for pet travel to Israel, she told me that “it not possible” and gave me FALSE information as to what would happen if I traveled with my pup (basically tried to scare me out of the idea). Then when I asked for a referral to another veterinarian that would be willing to help… her advice was “Google”. (BTW, PetSmart was able to do it for be without a problem) The second time I came for my puppy’s boosters, the people at the front were so rude and dismissive. I was not given eye contact and was told “yeah be right with you”. I sat for 15 minutes (after my appointment time) before being acknowledged. The only time I was met with good customer service, was when it was time for me to pay for the services. My puppy and I will NOT be returning. Very poor customer service. Please do better. Since I cannot comment on the response below.... I was NOT asked when I was planning on traveling (When I do my puppy will be old enough by that time). I was simply asking IF it was possible to have a health certificate signed by this animal hospital. I was NOT given a recommendation to another veterinarian. Yes, the papers were printed for me... but when it came to any questions I had, I was told that I would either be sent home from Israel or put in quarantine (which ended in 2021). I was NOT asking for the health certificate to be signed that day, I was asking for when I was ready for my travels. The veterinarian at PetSmart is APHIS accredited and was able to set appointments for FUTURE dates for my travels. I see the second point I made about experiencing poor customer service the second visit was ignored as well. Thank you for performing the services you did on my puppy but we will not be returning.
