How to Save Money at Animal ER of University Park

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog Q died over a year ago. I’ve been grieving ever since because of the regrets I hold taking my boy to this vet. Q had monthly seizures. On January 23rd 2021 Q had multiple seizures. I took him to this vet. Later in the day they sent me a text stating that while in their care Q had another seizure but he was okay. They sent me photos and I thought he was in good hands. The following day the call me and say he was ready for pickup and that he was wobbly but walking and he had just eaten. I drove to the vet to pick him up. There were extra fees which I didn’t care about because he was worth it to me. Then two young girls brought Q out on a gurney. They didn’t want to touch him and I couldn’t blame them because when I tell you he reeked of feces and urine I mean it was awful. I didn’t think much of the gurney because they mentioned he was wobbly. Then I took him home. Q didn’t walk for 9 days after. It was a literal nightmare. I started fearing the worst. Maybe they dropped him and hurt him some how. I went to his primary vet that referred a Nuro doctor. Apparently Q had a stroke in the care of this emergency vet. After weeks of 24 hour care he started walking again. Unfortunately, Q ended up dying in March after a tumor ruptured on his spleen. After thousands and thousands of dollars on treatment and medication this was the reason for all of the seizures. A stupid tumor that could have been removed but nobody did a simple ultrasound until it was too late. I will never get over the way he must have been treated in his time of weakness. It’s so painful to think you’re doing the right thing and in fact I made the decision to put him in the wrong hands. Ultimately, shortening his life. Hear me… Don’t take your pet here.

All of the staff at Animal ER of University Park were so helpful during such a stressful time with our little puggle. They were conscientious, thorough and informative. They took time to explain and work on a treatment plan. Great people!

My mini Goldendoodle 7 month old puppy devoured an 8 oz bag of Raisinetes that were accidentally left out. Not only are they covered in chocolate but raisins (grapes) are highly toxic to dogs. Of course it happened on a weekend but after the shock of learning she needed fluids and daily kidney levels check she stayed for 48 hours. The entire staff was very kind and professional. I especially was grateful for the phone call updates and texts with pics of my baby. It was an expensive mistake on my part but SO glad she is ok and the Vets were wonderful. While I don't want to have to go back - I won't hesitate to if needed.

Very pleasant and nice staff. Brought my dog in after a long night of her in a manic state due to UTI. She's an old girl of 12, with advanced arthritis, but the staff were gentle with her and didn't cause any undue stress to treat her. We left with some medications and she has been feeling so much better. Its reassuring to know this place is open 24 hours with great care when faced with a medical pet emergency
