How to Save on Veterinary Costs at Colonial Animal Hospital
Preventive care
Routine wellness exams can help identify health issues early, often before they become more serious or expensive to treat. Regular checkups are one of the most effective ways to manage long term veterinary costs.
Compare prescription pricing
Some pet medications prescribed at veterinary clinics may also be available through local or online pharmacies. It can be helpful to compare pricing when appropriate to reduce ongoing medication costs.
Consider pet insurance
Pet insurance may help cover a portion of eligible veterinary expenses depending on the plan, including accidents, illnesses, and in some cases preventive care. Coverage details, reimbursement levels, and deductibles vary by provider.

Dr. Martin and staff here have been amazing with our pup. We have been going to them since we first got her 13 years ago. We always feel well taken care of and supported for our sweet girls care. Lately in her old age we have needed them more and they have gone above and beyond to help us. Highly recommend them to all your fur babies!

I am assisting a friend with filing a pet insurance wellness exam claim for a recent visit. The invoice Colonial Animal Hospital provided failed to classify the vet and lab expenses properly. Requested a corrected invoice with the expenses correctly classified in order to file the insurance claim. Colonial Animal Hospital refused to correct their error. This was a simple request. Will not be going back to this vet.

I have been bringing both my dog and my roommate’s cat to this office for years, and until today, I have never had any issues with the staff, doctors, or technicians. Everyone has always been kind, professional, and helpful. Under normal circumstances, I would absolutely leave a five-star review. Unfortunately, I had a very unsettling experience during my dog’s recent visit for his semi-annual checkup and vaccinations. My dog is an 8-year-old, 10-pound Maltese with severe anxiety, separation anxiety, and some behavioral issues. He is very sweet, but he can become reactive and snap when he feels scared or threatened, even when there is no actual danger. He also has a cataract in his left eye, which I believe affects his ability to clearly see what or who is approaching him. I explained these concerns to the doctor, including his anxiety and behavioral struggles at home. The doctor responded by saying, “No he doesn’t,” in reference to my dog having anxiety. He then suggested that if my dog lunged at or tried to bite someone or our cat, I should pick him up, shake him, and yell at him. I immediately stated that I would not shake my dog. As the conversation continued, I felt increasingly dismissed and unheard. I eventually said, respectfully, that while I understood he was the doctor, I needed to advocate for my dog because I witness these behaviors every day. I explained that my dog visibly shakes when I put my shoes on to leave for work and clearly experiences anxiety. I also clarified that I was not asking to heavily medicate him, but simply looking for options that might help take the edge off during stressful situations. The doctor ultimately suggested trying trazodone as needed for anxiety, which I appreciated. However, the overall interaction remained uncomfortable and dismissive. What concerned me further was when I asked whether a dog water fountain might be healthier than a standard water bowl. The doctor responded by saying that his own dogs often drink from the pool or lick rainwater off outdoor furniture because his well water tastes bad. I found this response unprofessional and surprising in a veterinary setting. I want to be clear that this review is not a reflection of the clinic as a whole. I have trusted this office for years and have consistently had positive experiences with the staff and other providers. I also do not believe this doctor intended to be malicious or cruel. However, I do believe the bedside manner during this visit was inappropriate and dismissive, particularly when discussing legitimate behavioral concerns about my pet. I hope this feedback is taken constructively, as I would still like to continue trusting this clinic with my pets’ care moving forward.

My family and I have been going to Colonial Animal Hospital for generations, Dr. Martin and his staff has always gone above and beyond for myself and my family and my dogs. Dr. Martin and his staff has never made me feel like a number I feel like I’m part of their family I know when I walk in the front door my dogs are the most important thing for them. When my girl was sick, he even called me on his days off to check on her and was doing research on his own time for me. I am truly blessed to have Dr. Martin as my veterinarian. His staff is amazing and has true compassion. Thank you, Colonial Animal Hospital .

I have been going to Colonial Animal Hospital since 1999. All of our rescue kittens have been taken here for both routine and emergency care. We found our latest kitty in the middle of Military Trail on Christmas day. The staff and vets are kind, compassionate and knowledgeable.
