How to Save Money at Spire Canine Orthopedics (formerly Spire Veterinary Surgery)
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
Between our two dogs, we have had numerous positive and not so positive experiences with various vets & specialists in Colorado. I can truly say that I was absolutely blown away by the professionalism, empathy, and level of service provided by Dr. McAbee and the fantastic staff at Spire. They provided thorough information and were very patient with my many questions during our consult. I was very impressed at how smoothly the process went from consult to check-in on the day of surgery. It's rare to find such a great team all working together, well done to all at the office! The surgery itself, for an elbow arthroscopy on our 11-year old lab, went well. Updates were provided when surgery began, which helped calmed our nerves and a phone call once it was complete was fantastic. Having Dr. McAbee take the time to go through the videos of the surgery and walk me through everything step by step was fantastic. I have confidence that we made the right call in bringing our doggo here. We've got a few weeks to go to see the final outcome, but our doggo is on the path to new adventures. Thank you, Dr. McAbee and team. You are all amazing.

Spire Canine Orthopedics is amazing! My 8-lb Brussels Griffon broke her leg and they were able to get her into surgery the very next day. Everyone there was so kind and you can tell they really care about the pets. The pricing was very reasonable too, which was such a relief during such a stressful time. She’s recovering so well thanks to them, and I’ll be recommending Spire to anyone and everyone who needs orthopedic care for their dog!

I cannot say enough good things about Spire Canine Orthopedics, Dr. McAbee, and all of the staff at this beautiful facility. After learning that my dog Paisley was diagnosed with partial CCL tears in both legs, I was worried and emotional (started crying in the middle of the appointment,) and Dr. McAbee was nothing but compassionate, respectful and understanding. He explained every step of the TPLO procedure, recovery and prognosis, and performed bilateral TPLO surgery on Paisley in March. The team sent me updates during the surgery, Dr. McAbee called right after and also met with me when I picked Paisley up to explain how the surgery went as well as aftercare. At two weeks, I brought Paisely in for a suture check and Dr. McAbee again met with us to answer questions. We are going into week four post op, and I am so impressed with Paisley's recovery. Her sutures were completely clean and healed and much better looking compared to other TPLO pictures I have seen. She is walking no problem on both back legs. We will have a follow up x ray at 8 weeks. I have been very active with my dog (hiking, backpacking, running) since she was a puppy and I haven't been able to take her for months now because of one misdiagnosis after another. I feel as though Spire Canine Orthopedics has given me back my energetic, happy and athletic dog. I am so hopeful that we will be back in the mountains together soon. I cannot recommend or thank Dr. McAbee and his team enough for being absolutely professional, caring and all together wonderful.

This place is absolutely amazing, the whole team is fantastic! I have a Rottweiler/German Shepherd mix who isn’t usually too fond of the vet, but they treated him like any other dog and made him feel completely comfortable, he didn’t even need his muzzle! He needed a TPLO and MPL, and they walked me through the entire process, explaining everything so clearly and kindly. The surgery went perfectly, and they did such an incredible job, my boy is already starting to walk on it just two weeks later! I went to three other places before coming here, and this was by far the best. Their care, communication, and compassion were unmatched, and their pricing was very fair compared to others. Highly recommend this team!

My wife and I brought our American bulldog here in April for her second TPLO surgery and the experience was fantastic right from the start. The office is extremely nice, all of the staff very understanding and caring with how nervous our dog gets in any vet setting, and the procedure itself went extremely well. She actually healed better and more quickly this go-round than her first TPLO on her other leg (done with a different clinic. It healed fine, just a longer process a few years ago). The follow up and communication was great from start to finish, and the overall cost was actually less than we’d prepared ourselves for. We can’t say enough good things about Spire, and we would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone looking for a veterinary orthopedic clinic. Thank you for everything.
